New Delhi: Calcutta University announced the updated admission capacity of each affiliated college on July 27, 2023 in response to the adoption of the reservation for students from the economically weaker section (EWS), which was imposed by the education department in May.

Calcutta University has stated the maximum enrollment for each college's four-year and three-year undergraduate programs for each course.

In order to prevent the 10% reservation for EWS students from reducing the number of seats for general category students and seats reserved for other categories, CU increased the intake capacity for undergraduate courses by 22.2% in late June.

Each of the 152 colleges connected to CU now has a larger intake capacity. On the university's website, a list indicating the amended capacity has been posted.

"We need to know what the specific topic and course intake scenario will be after the capacity is increased by 22.2%. Before enrolling, undergraduate candidates should also have access to this information," according to Debaish Das, the Calcutta University registrar. "We must continue to be transparent."

According to a CU official, one of the objectives of publishing the figures on the university's website is to ensure that no institution admits more students than it has room for.

He claimed that complaints about some institutions accepting more students than they could accommodate due to pressure from student unions had been made to the university in the past.

"We worry that these colleges may try overadmission once more in the name of the increased intake brought on by the establishment of the EWS student quota. The university is attempting to stop any such attempts this year by uploading the intake data. The word that we are keeping an eye on the admissions concerns needs to get across to the colleges,” he said.

"When in doubt, a college should consult the unified data that CU has created," according to Joydeep Sarangi, president of New Alipore College.
