Mrs Jyoti Saini has been working as a Head of the Post Graduate Department of Fashion Designing at Shanti Devi Arya Mahila College, Dinanagar. She holds a Bachelor in Design in Fashion Design, a Master's in Design in Fashion and Textile and a Master of Science in Fashion Designing. With 18 years of experience in the teaching profession, she has completed two dissertations during the course of her professional studies.
Mrs Jyoti Saini has published research papers in reputed national and international journals and presented papers at various national and international conferences and seminars. Over the years, she has attended and conducted many fashion shows and workshops.
Additionally, she has served as a former Senate member of the Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar and is currently serving as a member of the Faculty of Sciences at Guru Nanak Dev University Amritsar. Furthermore, Mrs Saini is a Nodal Officer of MGNCRE, Ministry of Education, an NSS program officer and a Master Trainer in Community Based Participatory Research (CBPR) under Unnat Bharat Abhiyan (2.0).

Our course aims at encouraging creative exploration along with specific skills and techniques to understand the industry better, in the students. Students also participate in industrial internships that are arranged from time to time by industry experts to understand global market trends and to get hands-on experience working in fashion.

The MSc in Fashion Designing and Merchandising program at Shanti Devi Arya Mahila College can help students develop skills related to garment construction, pattern building, fashion illustration, graphic designing, market trend analysis and understanding the audience. How did you train yourself/faculty to deliver this program to the students?
To update their knowledge, faculty members regularly attend refresher courses, FDP and orientation programs. They follow famous Indian and Western designers, attend their exhibitions and shows, and take part in many online and offline workshops and courses under famous designers as well. They keep track of trends on social media and stay in connection with fashion designers in their area. Our faculty are extremely well-read about fashion forecasting and fashion trends.
How do you tend to build an industry connect with this program?
Attending workshops and events our students get to meet new people and build connections with them. These regular practices help us to make a bond with the industry and popular fashion designers. Nowadays it has become easy to maintain connections through social media like LinkedIn, Facebook and Instagram. The Internet plays a significant role in facilitating these relations, especially for our introverted students who find it difficult to network in person.
What are the types of projects that the students are working on through this program?
Shanti Devi Arya Mahila College’s MSc in Fashion Designing and Merchandising program is a combination of theory, practical and project work. Each student is allotted with a different project title and given full creative control. They are instructed to introduce in detail the research of their project topic, give a review of literature, present the research methodology, interpretation, aims and objectives, limitations, and questionnaires and draw a meaningful conclusion. Thereafter, the students showcase their designs through high-quality drawings and photos of their final collections and style one of their selected garments.
