Prof. P. Veera Somaiah, an alumnus of Osmania University, earned his M.Sc. and PhD in Chemistry from the esteemed institution. Commencing his academic journey as an Assistant Professor in 1989, he steadily climbed the ranks and achieved the position of Professor in 2006. His scholarly pursuits extended to the University of Durban in South Africa, where he successfully completed his post-doctoral study.

Prof. P. Veera Somaiah's academic contributions are reflected in his impressive body of work, which encompasses 47 research papers published in both national and international journals. His dedication to mentoring is evident, as five students have earned their PhD degrees under his guidance, with an additional eight research scholars currently pursuing their doctoral studies. His administrative roles have been diverse, including serving as an Additional Controller of Exams in the confidential section of Osmania University's Examination Branch. You held key positions at various prestigious institutions throughout your career. What is that one thing that made you excited and walk with Avanthi College in the journey?

I have been acquainted with Avanthi since the year 2000. During the process of starting the college back then, Mr. Avanthi Srinivas Rao used to visit my supervisor, Professor Navneet Rao. While serving as the joint director in the audit cell, I frequently visited the college and gained a comprehensive understanding of its standards. The college impressed me with its exceptional teaching faculty, top-notch infrastructural facilities, and the management's willingness to support the implementation of innovative initiatives. These factors left a lasting impression on me, and following my retirement, I decided to join the college.


How do you balance the needs of faculty, students, and administration as a Principal of the college?

Our college faces no significant issues concerning faculty. We have an ample number of experienced faculty members who are capable of handling all curriculum requirements. With examinations in charge and a dedicated placement officer, responsibilities are efficiently distributed among the faculty. The principal's role is minimized, as we have an academic director and an HR director, Jaya Pradha, overseeing recruitment. Every aspect is well-established, and as the principal, I make sure everything is going well.


As a Principal of the College, what is the USP that you would quote or what are the differentiating factors that make Avanthi College stand out from other colleges?

Situated in the central Barkatpura area of the city, Avanthi College enjoys excellent connectivity with transport facilities available from various parts of Hyderabad. The college is surrounded by numerous hostels, providing comprehensive facilities for students arriving from rural areas. The academic dynamics have been changing very rapidly. How do you think the scope of courses like you know M.Sc, B.Sc. and B.Com going to be in the future?

A significant majority of students are inclined towards admission in IT-related courses, specifically MCA, MBA, and B.Tech. Additionally, there is notable interest in science courses such as Life Sciences and Chemistry. The strategic location of Hyderabad, known for its numerous pharma and chemical industries, is advantageous for students pursuing chemistry. Graduates from our college often secure positions in various pharma industries, given the city's prominence as a hub for such industries. Hyderabad stands out as a key city for both pharma and IT jobs, second only to Bangalore in the IT sector. To meet industry demands, we regularly update our syllabus, offering courses across diverse domains. In the IT field, we provide options like B.Com Computers, B.Com in Business Analytics, and BBA in Management. For those interested in computer science, we offer B.Sc. courses. All our courses are meticulously designed to facilitate placements after the completion of the study period.


What kind of initiatives have been implemented to make students industry ready right after their course time?

In addition to regular class work and the standard curriculum, we provide specialized training to our students. We have dedicated coaching sessions focused on enhancing communication skills, language proficiency, and computer proficiency. Moreover, we go the extra mile by inviting guest faculty members from various organizations. These experts cover cutting-edge topics that may not be included in the standard curriculum, offering our students a well-rounded and comprehensive education.


What is your vision for the future of the college as a principal and what are some initiatives that you would like to implement?

Having been established nearly 30 years ago, our college is currently working towards obtaining NAAC accreditation to secure a high rating. Following this, the next milestone on our agenda is to attain autonomous status. In addition to these ambitions, our management is actively planning for deemed university status, envisioning a significant expansion of our institution. We already have a good footprint in both the Telangana and Andhra regions. The management is also dedicated to investing substantial resources and effort to realize the goal of achieving deemed university status. This strategic move underscores our commitment to providing quality education and facilitating further growth and recognition in the academic realm.
