Dr. T. Somassoundaram is a distinguished academician and able administrator with over 19 years of experience. He has grown from the ranks right here in the institute, starting his teaching career as Senior Lecturer from 2003. Prior to assuming the position of the HOD, He was the Professor in DMI. St. Johnthe Baptist University, Malawi (Central Africa). He obtained his PhD from Sathyabama Institute of Science & Technology, Tamil Nadu and Masters Degree from Sathyabama University, Chennai. He has published 14 research papers in various reputed National and International journals, besides a couple of patents to his credit. In his impressive teaching and administrative career, He has consistently promoted innovative teaching practices and imaginative thinking. He has endeared himself to his students and colleagues alike through his affable nature and empathetic leadership style.

Being a HOD of college, what are your roles and responsibilities towards the students?

My role and responsibility is to encompass teaching the students related subject knowledge. Student’s guidance & counseling & helping their personal, ethical, moral and overall character development. Keeping abreast of new knowledge and skills, help to generate new knowledge and help dissemination of such knowledge through seminars. Organize Special Trainings and Seminarson technological and managerial aspects.


How do you tend to establish healthy relations with the students and fellow faculty? 

Provide support and help to every student to define his/ her career interest. Regularly Conducting the performance appraisal so that faculty and students maintain healthy relations and comfort to ask any doubts required to the students.


How do you try to bring in a practical approach towards subjects and make it industry oriented ?

Promoting Industry institution interaction and thereby arranging Industrial training to the students and also inviting reputed industries for campus interviews. Maintain good skill oriented growth for the faculty and other members.


How do you strategize the curriculum and how often it gets updated to make it beneficial for the students?

As far as curriculum formation is concerned, we have a strong team of Board of Studies members, constituted with JNTUK representatives, other State Govt. Professors, Industry Experts and Alumni members along with our department senior staff. Our aim always would be to deliberate an optimum curriculum that’s a fusion of core CS and emerging components studded aptly. Many times the formation of curriculum aims to benefit the ambitious students, with a foresight of four years for the batch, to come out and get themselves industry-ready. 


What are your views upon the placements and higher education about the students from your department or how does your department prepare students for Higher education?

Organize personality development programs and invite industry experts to visit the campus and conduct seminars about “How to prepare for higher education” through experts. Regular CRT classes also makes students sharpen in competitive exams.

How do you help your student to cope up with the competition being so high in the outside world? 

We will insist them to upgrade their knowledge in all the latest engineering technologies including software’s.According to competition world we make students upgrade skills in technology and subject wise to perform better after getting out from the campus.


What are the challenges you faced/ are facing to uplift the quality of education of your department? 

Rural Backdrop students struggling to communicate, continuous upgradation of faculty teaching-learning skills and technical skills as per the technology revolution are some of the challenges. We have successfully mechanized ourselves with incorporation of Life Skills every year, having MoU with top tier IT industries to train our staff, who in turn will train our students.


When you came to college, what was your vision and how are you trying to achieve the same? 

To impart affordable and quality education in order to meet the needs of industries and achieve excellence in teaching. Providing Quality education to the students and making them strong in the subject is the main vision and always try to achieve this on every time in my job role.


How does the curriculum of your department/ college ensure the best practice of the industry? 

It is thoroughly reviewed by the industry experts and alumni before coming into implementation. We follow the standards suggested by AICTE & JNTU curriculum and for every four years curriculum updates will be adopted as per changes done by the board. The department always ensures the best curriculum provided to the students.


What do you see as the department’s/ college’s greatest strengths and how it can be enhanced?

“An environment , creative thinking, innovation” is the greatest strength of our department in specific and college in specific. Qualified and certified staff, who are always committed to uplift the spirits of students is another strength of the Department. Innovative teaching-learning, research-development and entrepreneurship-innovation orientation is another strength that helps students of VVIT to carve themselves into successful technocrats.
