Class 11 Biology Chapter 1 describes the living world that can be identified as the world around us, comprising all living creatures including plants, animals, and microorganisms. It has changed over the course of billions of years but the general composition has remained the same. Characteristics of Living Organisms

All living organisms like plants, animals, and microorganisms show certain characteristics which are as follows:

• Growth and development

• Response to stimuli
• Respiration
• Excretion
• Reproduction

Taxonomic Hierarchy

The study of grouping all living organisms based on their similarities and differences is called a taxonomy.  The series of categories in ascending or descending order is called taxonomic hierarchy which was proposed by Swedish scientist Carolus Linnaeus. 

• Different organisms are classified under different taxonomic hierarchies: kingdom, phylum or division, class, order, family, genus, and species. 
• Here, the kingdom has the highest rank in the hierarchy whereas the species ranks the lowest. 

Binomial Nomenclature

Carolus Linnaeus later introduced the binomial nomenclature of plants and animals which is defined as the biological system of naming the organisms.

• In this the name of the organisms is composed of two terms; the first term indicates the genus and the second term indicates the species of the organism.
• An Example of binomial nomenclature is Mangifera Indica, where Mangifera is the genus and Indica denotes the name of the species.
