M.Tech. in Biomedical Engineering: What is it About?

The objective of the course is to integrate technology with the medical sciences in such a manner that the synergistic relationship between them can help evolve a better system for medical diagnosis, research, treatment, and support systems.

Upon successful completion of the program, postgraduates are trained in the fundamental concepts and processes involved in biological engineering, and can efficiently develop creative ideas intended for early detection and identification of a variety of biological signals.

Enrolled students are taught to devise algorithms for successful and objective interpretation of biological data. The program imparts advanced lessons in biomedical electronics, analytical, and quantitative skills required in interpreting the data acquired and in processing medical data including imaging and enhancement techniques.

Students are equipped with the adequate skills in jargon required to interact knowledgeably with medical practitioners. The discipline draws content from a variety of areas such as chemistry, physics, medicine, electronics and mechanical engineering, to name a few.

Selection to this course is made through a 2-stage performance evaluation:

Stage I: Written test carrying 80 marks, of 90 minutes duration in the subject the candidate has applied for. This question paper consists of 80 Multiple Choice Questions.

Stage II: Out of the candidates who have qualified the written test, candidates 3 times the number of seats advertised are called for departmental clinical/practical/lab- based assessment.

Final Selection:  admission is based on the total score obtained by the candidate in stage-1 and Stage-II of the examination.

Eligibility for M.Tech. in Biomedical Engineering

As a minimum criterion of eligibility, aspiring candidates need to have completed graduation in (B.E. /B.Tech.) with a minimum aggregate score of 55%. Candidates in the final year of graduation are also eligible to apply.

Loan/ Scholarship Provisions:

The course fees is around 40000 per year but the hostel mess fees are very high, around 1.5 lakhs per year. This course also comes with teaching assistantship of 12400 per month subject to 8 hours of teaching assistantship hours.

Placement Experience:

Masters students become eligible for placement in the second year but are not eligible for internship placements. The average placement package of around 11 lpa but it's mostly non core and companies either tech or non tech

Remarks:

It was definitely under the IIT brand which made me feel inclined towards it. I went through all the faculty list and everybody seem to be doing interesting research. All faculties are young, smart, enthusiastic, considerate and very approachable. The curriculum design is superb as it does not put a lot of pressure on the student. I answered GATE exam in February 2019, got my results in around April and applied to the college around the same time. The application process at the time did not require an interview although it is required right now for non GATE intake.

Campus Life:

As an Mtech student I did not really interact much with the clubs but the institute has multiple clubs including drama, dance, arts, public speaking,poetry etc. Campus is very lively and before the pandemic there used to be DJ nights at least twice in a month. The campus is new and developing and easily connected with the help of local buses and cycleswithin the campus. All the necessary facilities are available within the campus.

As you will be admitted based on the GATE score you obtain, you will have financial support from the MHRD as scholarship per month and it will alone can help you for the whole program completion. The campus placements are also good, there are many companies which are in tie-up with the institution and with great packages.

The extracurricular activities are of a very high level. The sports fest is called AAVHAN which organizes many sports events. There is good participation from the girls' side. They win medals in inter IIT tournaments. The gender ratio is not that good but it is improving due to reservation to girls. There are various workshops organized to create awareness about nature, safety, cleanliness, etc. There is a gender cell that takes care of any gender discrimination case if any. There is usually no discrimination based on caste, creed, or religion among students.

Placement Experience:

The Placement is too good to compare to other IITs.There are more than 250 companies visiting every year for the Placement in December and the average package this year is above 20 LPA. There are numerous internship opportunities available to the students here with a good stipend of up to 2.5 lakh. The major recruiters are Goodman's Sach, BCG, Google, Microsoft, Barclays, Optiver, Yahoo, Sony Japan, etc.

Ans. One of my friends completed his MTech in Biomedical Engineering from IIT Bombay and gave an insight into the placement scenario of the same course. Out of 16 students who attended placements from this course, 14 students were placed. Another friend told me that 11 out of 17 in his batch were placed under decent roles. The others opted out of placements. A number of Biomedical companies like GE, Cerner, L&T etc visit the campus and offer decent roles. Many non core companies also allow Biomedical students to sit for their placements and sometimes offer good roles too. A number of analytics and data science jobs are also offered. However, I have written about the scope of an M.Tech in Biomedical Engineering based on some major aspects Job Prospects : This course offers a number of non-core jobs and core jobs. However, very limited core roles are offered that too with low packages. Many non-core jobs are offered but these are targeted by many; dual degree holders as well as M.Tech. students from other branches so the competition is high. You will have to portray your personality and leadership traits in order to get such roles. Higher Study: IIT Bombay has highly learned professors who have completed their research in elite institutes in the USA before joining IIT Bombay. Joining Ph.D. under them or getting recommendation letters can get you good research positions in top institutes. You will have to work hard to meet the right professor that offers you the best project to work on. Education: Department of Biosciences and Bioengineering in IIT Bombay is more inclined towards Biosciences than core Engineering so it's recommended you take courses from the Electrical Engineering department also. Ans. I feel you are torn between the IIT and NIT tags here. In that case, new IITs are a better option unless you are considering top NITs like Warangal, Surathkal, or Calicut.  But it seems you have 2 generation NITs in your list only. In that case, IIT Mandi is a preferable choice.  IIT Mandi has a better learning environment and competition  IIT Mandi has one of the most beautiful campuses and it’s location is also a boon. The new IITs have young professors who are dynamic and friendly.  Either program will offer a plethora of opportunities, and choosing one over the other will be merely because of personal preferences. Read more

Ans. Choosing an M.Tech. in biotechnology for research purposes might not be a good decision.  For better job opportunities and placements, opt for other streams like CSC; otherwise, you will end up as a postgraduate in the biotech field without the perfect job you wish for.  The biotech department in most of institutions, including IITs, is weak in nature. Most students prefer other streams for their higher studies, which is a good idea to secure your career.  The only option left for you is to take the JRF and NET exams. Admission: A student must have a degree in BE/BTech Biotechnology or MSc Biotechnology/Microbiology/Biochemistry/any other branch of Life Sciences. Shoolini University accepts students through GATE/HPCET or any other recognized entrance test followed by a Personal Interview. After the selection based on the merit list of GATE/HPCET is done, the vacant seats are filled based on the merit of BTech with candidates having at least 50%.
