  • Dislikes:
  • Only dislike is that it can be too big at times and it is very cold. Otherwise all of the above are great!

Placement:

Lots of companies came to visit big and small with career fairs and private events. 95% either got a good job or went to graduate school and most people started out earning $70k USD or more.

Academics and locations. It was definitely a work hard play hard experience. I also wanted a school with school spirit and a good sports program that was not too far from home.

  • Dislikes:
  • The transportation is not that good, especially during winters.,
  • The rent is high and on-campus housing is very random and limited.,
  • The tuition for a master's program is very expensive with very limited TA/RA positions.,
  • There are very few opportunities for International students to get their fees waived off.

Placement:

The placement is amazing at our University. All of my friends who graduated from the master's program have been placed in huge companies such as KPFF, TY Lin, Black and Veatch, etc. Companies that visit our University include Tesla, SpaceX, Lucid, Google, and many other major companies. Most of the topmost national laboratories visited too but they offer positions preferably to US citizens. The median salary depends on the location. In Ann Arbor for a civil engineering master's the median salary is around 70k USD per year.

The reason I chose to go to the USA was the economic stability and a very systematic education system. It's much easier to stay here than in other countries according to me. The University of Michigan was ranked no. 4 in USA for civil engineering when I joined. However, the major factors were the course structure, flexibility in taking courses outside of the department, and research opportunities and funds. U of M being an R1 University is one of the highest funded Universities in the USA. As for the flexibility in coursework, I took half of the credits for my degree from outside of the department which gave me knowledge and insights of various other disciplines. All sorts of career opportunities can be achieved here. There are various career fairs and workshops to help students improve their resumes, network with potential employers and get well-earning jobs. The name of the University itself weighs a lot and it's not very difficult to get a job even during the recession. My overall experience in the past 2 years has been excellent and I have enjoyed my time here to the fullest. I did great in my academics, learned various subjects, networked with people, participated in various student-run organizations on campus, and made plenty of friends. My experience during my Master's was awesome and hence I decided to pursue my PhD from the same University.

  • Dislikes:
  • Just the winters here sometimes get very long, so the first year can be an adjustment, specially for people from our countries, since we are usually not used to long winters.

Placement:

I can talk about opportunities after a PhD here - many top industries like Google, Microsoft, Apple, Amazon, Meta hire for research scientist roles, etc. Many students also go to universities as tenure track professors.

Internship:

Since its my first year, I am focusing on my research this summer.

Placement:

As I am only an undergraduate I do not know too much about the post-study programs here, I do plan on applying to medical school here however, and from what I do know, U of M has a very good medical school.

Internship:

As I had mentioned before, I am in the pre-health process so I have not yet engaged with any internships. I am currently looking to finish my degree, take the MCAT, and apply to medical schools across the country.

  • Dislikes:
  • Considering it is a public university, the tuition fee is very high for all the programs that you take although there are many funding opportunities. It is a small college town therefore sometimes one might get bored of exploring the same places. A car is beneficial if you are not within walking distance of campus. The bus feasibility is good but it can take up a lot of your time traveling if you do not look up the bus timings before hand and leave accordingly.

Placement:

The companies visiting depend on your program. Good mix of top and middle-level companies. I am not sure about the other details.

Internship:

Placement:

The placements are really good with good packages and many renowned companies come for placement drives to take students so lots of opportunities. A lot of students also get co-op while studying so that is also good and there are tons of research labs with lots of positions for students who might be interested in research.

Good university for my program and one of the best ECE departments in the USA, umich is also a very good rated university among all others for masters and graduate programs with one of the best engineering courses. Good engineering department and faculty as well as good research groups.

I'm sure they do at the graduate level, I have not applied yet so I cannot offer insight. They do offer intern/research experience for undergraduates through a program called UROP but I preferred to apply and interview for a real job in research on campus than use their program.

Their kinesiology college allowed me to pursue a bachelors in movement science while completing pre-med requirements. The college accepts freshman so I wouldn't have to waste a year doing basic studies in the main LS&A college, and could sooner focus on interests.
