Each student of theÊLaw, Development and GlobalisationÊprogramme offered byÊSOAS University of LondonÊis required to successfully complete four (4.0) units of coursework and a 12,000 word dissertation on a topic related to his or her specialisation. The dissertation must be linked to a module offered at SOAS itself, and attendance on the module will be treated as being part of the process of supervision. Year-long modules are worth 1.0 unit, while single-term modules are worth 0.5 units. A student will thus complete between four and eight taught modules during his or her LLM programme.

Examinations for all taught modules will be held in May/June of each year and the dissertation will be due for submission during September of the final year of registration. The assessment for each module may vary.

Knowledge & Understanding

  • Students will acquire specialist knowledge in the area of law, development and governance.
  • This includes, but is not necessarily limited to, knowledge and understanding of the following:the theoretical and practical underpinnings of law, development and governance;
  • the context in which law is made, interpreted, adjudicated, and amended;
  • the role played by law in different social and economic environments;
  • the role and function of legal institutions;
  • the weight and significance of different sources and methodologies.
  • Students will develop knowledge of how to locate relevant materials and assess their relevance and/or importance.
