Mental health nursing is a value-based and very rewarding profession working with children, young people and adults of all ages with a variety of mental health problems and from numerous cultures and backgrounds.

This BSc Mental Health Nursing (Hons) at Coventry University is designed to help equip you with the hands-on clinical and care skills to prepare you to practise autonomously and compassionately, providing person-centred and compassionate care and support for service users to be physically safe and emotionally secure.

Career prospects

The National Health Service (NHS) has estimated there are around 35,000 mental health nurses within today’s NHS and the demand for these specialist nurses has increased with a number of people in contact with NHS mental health services surging by as much as 40%.

During your three years on the programme, you will undertake six placements in a range of service settings, working with and alongside qualified mental health nurses, and therefore potential local and regional employers.

Eligibility & Entry Requirement

Academic Eligibility:

  • Students must achieve an overall score of 60% minimum in the standard XII examination. 
  • students with 60% in Maths or Accountancy or Economics is compulsory.

Indian Student Eligibility:

Indian students are eligible to apply if they complete one of the following eligibility criteria:

  • Students must achieve an overall score of 60% minimum in the Standard XII examination.
  • 60% in Standard XII English language from certain examination boards only (Central boards, Maharashtra, West Bengal, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, and Uttarakhand).

Along with the minimum eligibility requirements, international students hailing from non-English speaking countries need to prove English proficiency through IELTS/TOEFL/PTE or any equivalent test to get admission to this program.

This course aims to develop your knowledge of mental health, various disorders and innovative nursing care approaches. It is designed to equip you with the knowledge and competence to understand the experiences of people with mental health problems and to assist and facilitate their journey to recovery.You will gain hands-on experience with real service users under supervision from qualified practitioners, spending 50% of your time on clinical practice placements. These will take place in a range of healthcare environments within the NHS in hospitals and community placements, at private hospitals and independent care providers. 


This three-year course is designed to prepare you for the professional role of a registered Nurse (Mental Health) who will have the skills to respond to the mental health needs of individuals in partnership with them, their families, significant others and their community.
