Manjinder Singh Review at University Of Birmingham, Birmingham | Collegedunia

Research life at University of Birmingham

My overall experience has been great till now. My research is going up to the mark, and I am enjoying my stay here along with various experience associated with social events.

Course Curriculum :

The course curriculum and academics are impressively formulated to provide necessary industrial exposure, understand current problems faced by many industries and provide problem solving mindset to the student.

Exams :

My score: IELTS 6.5 (minimum 5.5 in each module) (Listening 6.5, Reading 7.0, Speaking 6.0, and Writing 6.5). I have to submit SOP, 3 LOR, and my CV. Please mention 1. What inspired you to do this research. 2. Mention about the related projects you carried out during your graduation and post-graduations. 3. What are you planning to do at university. Also, I had two interviews with my host supervisor. Points to remember: 1. Be confident and knowledgeable about the content you have. 2. Present yourself convincingly. 3. Pre-plan your research objectives with supporting literature.

Placement :

I am Ph.D. student here. I think I can get post-doc opportunities from here very easily. Many of my colleagues are already working with many of the companies, solving their problems. They have great opportunities to get absorbed in the same company. I believe, if you are studying in university with such high world ranking you will easily get placed with 30000 to 50000 GBP/annum.

Internship :

No, I am purely working in university.

Fees :

12,390 GBP/annum after scholarship.

Scholarship :

I got the Commonwealth Split-Site Scholarship which is 1236 GBP/month. There was a special application for the scholarship along with 3 LOR's, Host letter, SOP and research proposal.

Faculty :

I am not sure about faculty to student ratio as I am a research student. But I am pretty confident that they are very easily approachable and helpful. My supervisor Prof. Mike Adams and my co-supervisor Dr. Alessio Alexiadis have supported me unconditionally in my personal and professional life.

Campus Life :

Campus life is great. There are various clubs and societies which organize numerous events. There are Indian and religious-based societies that provide Indian culture flavor in the University. You can participate in various social events.

Hostel :

I am living outside the campus on private property, paying 345 GBP, including all bills. The facilities are very good, but this property is far from the university. If you want to live near the university, you have to pay more.
