Dislikes

  • College doesn't have enough hostel accomodation to accommodate all the students, forcing many students to commute daily or to take up flats nearby the college at a high cost as PGs aren't available nearby.
  • Students residing in the flats nearby have to arrange everything ranging from food to stay to necessary furnitures themselves. Also the food that is available nearby isn't good, it's unhealthy and not advisable for daily intake.

Course Curriculum Overview :

The course curriculum is quite relevant and comprehensive, it can be a bit challenging sometimes. The curriculum helps in satisfactory preparation for the GATE exam and also to secure placements in those fields which the course is about. The class timings are as follows : the classes occur on 5 days of the week. Saturday and Sunday are free days. Everyday the classes are from 9 am to 4:35 pm. Practical class times may vary depending on the experiment being performed. Any events like fests, competitions that take place in the even semester take place after 5:00 pm generally. There is a 1 hr 10 min break in between classes from 12:40 to 1:50. P.S. attendance is really a pain in the ass in these classes????

Internships Opportunities :

Internships opportunities are there based on the skillset of candidate. Being a student of Electrical companies like Texas instruments, tata steel, cesc provide the core internships mainly which may be converted to PPO based on performance. I'm a 2nd year student currently so I don't have the experience of internship till now.

Placement Experience :

Students get eligible for placements in the 4th year. They are eligible to appear for internships from the 3rd year. The highest package remains around 50lpa. The average package remains somewhere around 10lpa. About 80-85% strength get placed. Companies offering high packages include Microsoft, ibm, Uber , Texas instruments, Google etc. companies like Accenture, tata steel, Aditya Birla group, PWC etc offer packages of medium range. I plan to get a decent enough placement after my degree.

Loan/ Scholarship Provisions :

Basically there are 3 different feelings structure for students based on family income Students having family income > 5LPA have to pay the entire fees of 68k per semester(applicable for gen, gen-ews, obc-ncl) Students having family income between 1 and 5 lpa get 2/3rd tution fee waiver (for gen, gen-ews, obc-ncl Students having family income < 1 lpa get full tution fee waiver. SC/ST get full tution waiver irrespective of family income. Students with full tution fee waiver have a fees of about 5k which gets reimbursed by various scholarship schemes. I got admission through obc-ncl quota and have family income 6lpa hence I have to pay the full fees of 68k every semester.

Campus Life :

Almost each department conducts their own departmental fests. Mechanical has IMPETUS. electrical dept has SPHURAN. metallurgy has METALLIUM. An annual cultural fest REBECA is the most famous fest of the college. Various events are organised in all the the fests. Sports activities are also organised. Participation in everything is voluntary. Being a day scholar as I wasn't alloted a hostel because of shortage of hostel accomodations I didnt participate in any of these as I commute from home daily and all the events start from 5 pm after the normal classes it would have made me very late too reach my home.

Admission :

Admissions in this college take place through jee mains percentile and rank. Candidates who have appeared in the jee mains and have a valid jee rank apply for josaa counselling and fill up choice of college based on their preferences. I applied for many other NITs like durgapur, allahabad, jamshedpur i didn't get into some of them because I didn't have enough rank to get in I could have gone to Durgapur but chose IIEST because I reside in Kolkata and it is closer to my home. NIT DGP and IIEST almost have the same cutoff ranks for different departments. Usually CST tends to have highest opening ranks. In Iiest it's about 11k in the first round of josaa. the rest departments follow cst in the following order : IT, ETC, EE, ME, Aerospace and applied mechanics, CE, metallurgy and materials, mining engineering. Overall admission process is lengthy and lasts about 3-4 months. After josaa and csab counselling candidate has to physically report to the college to confirm their admission.

Faculty :

Faculty-student ratio is a bit steep maybe 1:10. Some teachers don't cause any problems regarding attendance whereas some teachers are really strict about it. Course Structure is do-able but exams tend to be a bit on the tougher side, especially the mid-semester exams. The exam and marking structure is as follows : there are some(mostly 5) theory subjects having 3 or 4 credits in those subjects 50% marks is taken from end semester exams, 30% from mid semester exams and 20% is teachers assessment which varies from teacher to teacher, they can take class tests for it, maybe some professional can allotment some marks for attendance and assignments like I said it depends on the teacher. Apart from theory subjects every semester some practical subjects are there too having 2 credits. In these subjects most marks are dependent on class performance and some(maybe 20%) marks are alloted to a test that is taken at the end of semester.(Practical exams)

Placement Experience:

Students from 7th semester onwards are elegible for campus placements. Some of the companies that visits for placements are Google, microsoft, amazon, pwc, TI, accenture, PPEL, etc. A total of 920 recruiters were there which offered 753 offers to the students and out of them around 75-78% were placed. The highest placement package was offered by microsoft for 51 lpa as PPO to 14 students and the role was IDC. The average package is around 7.5 lpa. I am planning to appear in GATE exam and go for masters in IITs after completion of my degree where i will be persuing my further studies in transportation engineering.

Course Curriculum Overview:

B.Tech in CSE is future proof and a very good course for IT sector jobs and I was always excited working in these companies, that's why I choose the course. There are 10-12 faculties present in every department. Each faculty is M.Tech qualified and Drs. Their teaching quality is very good. 4 internal theory and 2 Lab exams happen each semester. The questions are standard, regular, and sincere students can easily pass.
