Remarks :
UBKV is known for the best ug education facilities in West Bengal. I have enrolled by general quota in Bsc Horticulture main campus. Though the admission brochure was ranged a minimum of 60% Mark's to enroll, students having 89 or 90% Mark's got admitted at last in spot counseling. Minimum 60% in aggregate and teach physics, chemistry, biology or vocational Agriculture or Horticulture in HS or equivalent exam for General or OBC; 50% in aggregate for SC / ST or PWDs and minimum age of 16 years is required as per university website. Hill and ICAR quota and vocational admission are available as per seat availability. Spot counseling was arranged at ATIC of UBKV main campus, pundibari, Coochbehar. According to the up-gradation of choice filling and student presence from the merit list, I got admitted and had a medical test. Document verification and hostel enrollment were done in the DSW office.
Course Curriculum Overview :
I chose Horticulture for its course diversification. It includes floriculture, pomology, plantation, aromatic, medicinal, ornamental and vegetable crops and their breeding , post harvest technology, plant protection and extension etc. Its scope is developing throughout India and abroad day by day. Horticulture faculty has 5 departments and Agriculture faculty has 10 departments. Each department includes a Head and 3- 5 assistant or associate professors and Our 2019 batch has 24 students. In some course, we do combined class with 64 Agriculture students. Each faculty is PhD holder in their specific field and most of them have qualified from IARI and IIHR. 3-4 professors are members of NAHEP and research projects . We appear a midterm, an endtrm including practical, viva and assignments per semester. Each course have vast theory and practical syllabus so, it is difficult to remember but if it is interesting to you, there is not so much to worry. Endterm question papers come from ICAR.
Internships Opportunities :
As Horticulture is more popular in South India, south-west and north India for fruits, flowers, ornamental, spice and condiments for international and national agro- economic zone, research, institutes, demands, the placement for msc and internship are better in Bangalore. Ubkv faculties provide help for our preparation, studies and involving in some seminars.
Placement Experience :
As the 4th year is an intern year, RAWE goes on in different area of north bengal. No direct placement but ready for any competitive exam as course include every aspects. Banking, WBCS, UPSC etc. Also every year, many students got 1- 20 rank in ICAR- PG( JRF) and also outstanding qualified in IARI, IIHR, IISR. By GATE, CAT qualify, chance in IISC, IIT , BARK for engineering, biotech, biochemistry etc. Aslo can gat jobs in KVKs under ubkv, technical lab assistant, enterpruner, nursery grower, landscaper, orchandist, food processer, fssai, research directories etc. Students gat merit scholarship and fellowship around 60- 65% each year. Wslk- in - interviews take place as per vacancies and priority of qualification and experience. Moderately high placement is available.
Loan/ Scholarship Provisions :
Cost to study is very less for ug. It is Rs. 4900 per semester for hostellers and Rs. 4300 for day scholars in 4 years and 8-semester Bsc Horticulture course programme. National talent scholarship of Rs. 2000 per month for icar affiliated non domicile students having 7 CGPA. University scholarship of Rs. 175 per month for minimum 6.5 cgpa holders and Rs. 225 per month for highest CGPA holders in each batch. Free studentship is awarded to 20% students holding min 6.5 cgpa whose current family income is less than 1.5 lakh. Rs. 3000 for STUDENT READY programme ( 2500/- ICAR share+ 500/- state share) is provided to each students in 4th year RAWE. Walk- in- interview notification are provided in ubkv.ac.in website for recruitment in posts of assistant professor, associate professor, professor, technical assistant and internship as per seat vacancies.
Campus Life :
Freshers' welcome ceremony is conducted by 2nd-year students and everyone includes students and professors take part in it. Annual picnic in Nov-Dec for Ug and pg individually and picnic tour is in the beauties of hills and valley or fountain of Coochbehar, alipurduar or Darjeeling district. Excursions are conducted according to course requirements. Viswabvar, hostel picnic, Sarawati puja, Ganesh Chaturthi, Teacher's day, Christmas eve, Raksa Bandhan, and social ceremony ( 2- 3 days ongoing) are celebrated. Cricket and football matches between students or student-teacher occur. Also, 3rd-year students take part in national AGRIFESTS. Our central library contains so many books and journals of famous writers and practice books for competitive exams like- UPSC, Banking, WBCS, GATE, CAT, JRF, etc. There are 3 smart classrooms and others including microphone, ca, and projectors, having a white screen, whiteboard, chalkboards also. We have farms to get amenities for fieldwork and modern labs.
Hostel Facilities :
Two girls' hostels ( International student hostel for MSC 1st year, Teesta Hall for ug and pg students). For ug, each room has chairs, tables, wardrobes, beds each for 3 hostellers accommodation. Each floor has a common bathroom with 3 latrines, 4 bath- toilets, 1 gisa. Free wifi and network available. A mess with a kitchen and dinner tables. Meals have moderate quality and each lunch-dinner different includes fish, meat, vegetables, rice, curry, dal, egg, and breakfast. After admission verification, the hosteler form should fill up properly and after getting approved, the room will be given. Rs. 600 per semester and mese bill of 1800 per month of full accommodation provide to mess secretary within due date ( otherwise fine). As the campus is in a rural area, it is the safest to be a hosteller rather than living with renting house fair as no pg is there nearby but far in khagrabari area. For girls, the hostel gate is closed at 7 pm till the next day at 5 is. Facilities of badminton and caram inner ground
