Remarks :
Thapar institute overall has a good image especially for engineering programs but they are not concerning for Master's and PhD students and their placements. The quality of faculty is deteriorating day by day as non-deserving candidates are higher than deserving candidates. they prefer their own connections for giving job to candidates and reject deserving candidates without citing any reason.
Course Curriculum Overview :
The course program was good but faculty did not take extra burden to teach and guide PhD students. Your PhD supervisor supports you only. All your research and publications depend upon you supervisor and his/her specialization and experience. Also patience is highly important for PhD research.
Placement Experience :
Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology has good placement structure but only for engineering students and not for Master's and PhD students. Also institute do not recruit their own students for faculty positions and not providing any support for placements to Master's and PhD students.
College Events :
There are several technical, cultural and festival events celebrated by institute every year. They have several societies/ chapters that run in Thapar institute includes literary society, Music, photography, cultural activity society, environmental welfare society, and collaboration with several local NGOs to do social work.
Fee Structure And Facilities :
The fee structure is highly expensive for all courses. The average annual fee for undergraduate courses is more than 1 lakh while for Master's and PhD programs it is approximately 50-80 thousand per year. Institute accepts both online and offline mode of fee payment. Yes college provides every detail about fee structure but takes additional fee/ charges in the name of development fee, fines and by other means.
Loan/ Scholarship Provisions :
I have not availed any scholarship or education loan. All the finances were beared by my own. However, I am working in a research project under my supervisor along with my PhD where I was getting some financial help for doing the project work. Thapar Institute also provide some Teaching Associate-ships to PhD students where they work for Institute and respective departments for conducting practials, tutorials and as invigilators during exams.Institute provides some scholarships to undergraduate students.
Campus Life :
Thapar Institute holds several parties, workshops and get together on their campus. They have several fests every year where all students and faculty members participate. Annual athletic meet is also organised by Institute. Institute also hold several research and social workshops for students, faculty members and local community.
Hostel Facilities :
No. I am a day boarding student there. The institute is in my home town and I commute daily. My few friends were residing in hostels. There are several hostels in Thapar Institute ranging from cheap to expensive but every year they filled the expensive hostels first followed by cheap hostels. The facilities are according to hostel fees they charged.
Alumni/Alumna :
Thapar Insitute has a wide network of alumni and senior students of all courses throughout the world. The alumni group is divided into several regional and local groups and also hold get together every year. The alumni groups are mainy composed of engineering students and they helpful for only engineering students.
Admission :
When I joined the PhD programme in 2010, at that time no entrance test was there. But now the admission is through entrance test conducted by TIET every year two times (May-June and November-December). I chose this institute as the city is my home town and was easy to spend my time of study in my home town.
Faculty :
In PhD, we had one full semester (6 months) of course work related to our research work. Though the faculty was experienced and highly educated but still PhD students have to work on their behalf without depending upon faculty members. Lectures did not have any relevance for research or industry oriented or any certifications. Its just the basic study.
