For any program, the most important part is what you are expecting from it after completing it. Here, your expectations after completing the MTech CSE program at IIT Kanpur will determine how you plan your Masters. For instance, do you want exposure in a particular field day mining or do you want exposure across various fields? Some might prefer to pursue a theoretical project for their major's thesis while some prefer working on a practical system. Fortunately, the curriculum at IIT Kanpur is very flexible and provides the right blend of both theoretical knowledge and research work.
Here are a few pieces of advice that will help you gain maximum advantage from the MTech in CSE at IIT Kanpur
- Make sure you go for challenging courses only else, you will end up with a laid-back attitude
- If you aren’t sure of your area of expertise, go for a course that is taught by the best professors.
- During the literature survey part of your thesis work, participate with full focus even if your advisor isn’t very helpful.

CS students at IIT Kanpur can be found doing a number of activities during their second-year summer vacations. Some activities they indulge themselves in are
- Mostly, CSE students spend their time preparing and building their resumes. For this, they involve themselves in research projects under the guidance of professors.
- Some students prefer doing an HSS course during their summer vacations so that their workload during the semester is reduced to a little extent.
- Soke students build their resumes by applying for internships either on or off campus.
- Some coding lovers are selected for GSOC and go for their Google internships
- Some students who want a break from studies and want to pursue their hobbies in sports, culture or tech stuff do so. A number of clubs like robotics, electronics, aeromodelling, programming, etc.

Data Science has a lot of future scope, and its demand will only increase with time. This field requires a good understanding of Statistics, Mathematics, and Computer Science (Especially Python Language).
BSc. in Data Science is an even better option than CSE at present. Moreover, college-wise, IIT Kanpur is way ahead of IIT Dhanbad.
Therefore I would recommend you choose BSc. Statistics and Data Science at IIT Kanpur over CSE at IIT Dhanbad.
What is your review of the earth sciences department at IIT Kanpur?
The Earth Sciences is a Department imparting education related to the study of Earth and its geological reliefs. The best part about this Department is that every course here overlaps with some or the other course of other departments making it a multifaceted one.
Earth Sciences curriculum overlaps with many courses in Material Science and Physics, Civil and Chemical, and even Electrical and CSE. This provides diversity in the overall learning experience of the course making it very interesting.
The only major issue is that due to common courses, the curriculum is vague and has no well-defined structure and content. We hope that this flaw is taken care of in the near future.
The program provides versatile job prospects even in the field of Satellite Remote Sensing, weather prediction, and geothermal power plants.
Has IIT Kanpur lost its charm?
I don’t think IIT Kanpur has lost its charm considering its excellent research facilities and the research work it has done in recent times. Also, the excellent placements testify to its charm and credibility. But if you are talking about attracting top rankers, then yes, IIT Kanpur is a little behind IIT Delhi and IIT Bombay in attracting the top 100 JEE rankers. There are many reasons why this is happening
- IIT Bombay and IIT Delhi being metro cities attract more students than Kanpur, a poorly developed city.
- The availability of coaching institutes makes life easier for students preparing for higher studies
- Misconceptions about IIT Kanpur’s curriculum being highly rigorous and college life being very rigid stops many students from joining it. However, recently the curriculum has been updated and made flexible to suit the needs of the students.
- The poor location of IIT Kanpur becomes a disadvantage during placements when some companies decide not to come to the campus for placements. However, this is only with a very few companies and is not a major option to discredit IIT Kanpur
All in all, IIT Kanpur hasn’t lost its charm even a bit and is still known for its cutting-edge research and excellent quality of education.
