Can a dropper get into CSE IIT Bombay?

SB
Sumit Bose Posted On : March 20th, 2023
IIT Bombay (2019)

I have seen a dropper get into CSE IIT Bombay. You can get into CSE either by staying among the top 50 or by branch change. While being among the top 50 may seem difficult, the reality is it indeed is achievable. I am going to narrate a real incident that will help you understand better.

There was an aspiring engineer Divyansh Srivastava who got into BITS Pilani on the first attempt with an Integrated MSc course. He wasn’t satisfied and decided to sit for JEE again. This time his rank was 904 and could have easily taken CSE at Pilani but instead, he chose to take risks and was able to get into IIT Bombay Chemical. Still, he wasn’t satisfied and decided to take one last risk and miraculously got CSE, IIT Bombay.

The main moral from this incident is that once you believe in yourself you can almost achieve anything.

To get a seat in IIT Bombay in computer science, how many marks should a person make on the IIT Advance?

PG
Pratik Gandhi Posted On : March 18th, 2023
B.Tech. CSE, IIT Bombay

To get a seat at IIT Bombay in computer science, one must qualify in JEE Advanced and obtain a high rank. JEE Advanced is the entrance exam for admission to the IITs. The cutoff marks for JEE Advanced vary each year based on various factors such as the difficulty level of the exam, the number of applicants, and the number of available seats.

In general, a candidate must score well above the minimum cutoff marks to be considered for admission to IIT Bombay. In recent years, those who have secured a rank between 1 and 100 have had a good chance of getting admission to CS in IIT Bombay. However, this is not a fixed criterion and may vary based on the year and the specific circumstances.

How great are the professors in CSE Department in IIT Bombay?

PG
Pratik Gandhi Posted On : March 18th, 2023
B.Tech. CSE, IIT Bombay

One of my friends had a great experience interacting with a brilliant CSE professor at IIT Bombay, Dr. D.B. Phatak

He called the professor who gladly invited him over to his office. My friend was impressed as such a busy person who is 65 years of age was ready to meet him without hesitation. He reached his office and was welcomed almost as if the professor was expecting him for the past few weeks. He was simultaneously attending calls and yet managed to attend to my friend happily. Talking to him did not look like one is talking to a Padamdhee awarded such a humble attitude. He told my friend his youth stories and discussed a number of topics. In the end, my friend couldn’t resist asking what kind of person gets successful like him. To this, the professor replied,“ I will tell you an anecdote. I am chairman of a certain bank body where we conduct elections for nominating a board member. Once we had elections where each person got some 3–5 votes and generally one of those votes people gave to themselves. In that particular election, there was only one lady who has ethically and honestly given all votes to other fellow members and in the end, she lost the election by one vote only. Do you know who that lady is today? She is chairman of SBI. Your ethics make you great, not the degrees, money, and positions.”

The gist of the interaction was that one can become successful irrespective of his position and credentials. What matters is how humble your stay even after being extremely successful.

What are the placement opportunities after earning Master from IIT Bombay in civil engineering?

AB
Advaith Bhaskar Posted On : March 18th, 2023
Lives in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India (2000–present)

IIT Bombay Civil Engineering branch is well known for its programs like Master, Dual Degrees, and BTech. Candidates with good profiles have a wide range of opportunities. BTech students are preferred for Non-core jobs whereas MTech students are preferred for MTech students.

Some jobs offered to students belonging to the Civil Engineering branch at IIT Bombay are

  1. Structural Designer: Top companies like Dar Al, Walter P Moore, and Thornton Tomasetti offer this role. Around 1 to 4 students are hired for such roles by each company. The most important criteria are CPI and your proficiency in software.
  2. Site Engineer: These roles are offered by companies like SP group, and LnT Look. You are tested usually on the basics of civil engineering and your ability to give long-term commitment.
  3. Management Trainee: Many civil companies offer management profiles also. Students with extracurricular backgrounds with reasonable academics are usually preferred for such roles. Some companies from the Middle East also offer such profiles.
  4. Teaching: In the last few years many private universities hire Masters's students directly for Assistant Professor posts. They are required to start their Ph.D. in less than a year.
  5. Other Sub branches: Companies for water resources, Geo-tech, and Surveying offer very few roles. A few companies such as Dar Al open these profiles too.
  6. Non-Core Companies: Companies in the fields of investments, analytics, Banking, etc either don't open for M.Tech students or are not short-listed for interview.

100% placement at IIT Bombay is just a myth and you have to work hard to secure a job.

Is there is equal value in doing an MTECH from IIT Bombay in comparison to doing a BTECH from IIT Bombay?

AT
Adwait Tejas Posted On : March 18th, 2023
studied Aerospace and Aeronautical Engineering at Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay (2021)

As an IITB undergraduate, you may observe that some UGs do not respect M.Techs from IIT Bombay. However, this is not a fair judgment as M.Techs work hard on their projects, have great practical knowledge of their stream, and know their stuff. While clearing JEE is a parameter to gauge one's intelligence, it does not solely determine one's worth or capability.

Interestingly, the placement survey of the past 2 years reveals that M.Techs give tough competition to UGs during placements and get placed in core jobs with good packages. In fact, in some cases, fewer UGs get placed in core jobs and instead opt for non-core sectors or start-ups. Companies like BMW and Mahindra have taken in a good number of M.Techs from the mechanical stream.

Therefore, it is crucial to recognize your capabilities and potential, and not judge or compare yourself based on the degree you possess. B.Techs and M.Techs have different parameters of evaluation, and both seem to have done well for themselves in their respective fields. Remember to focus on your skills and knowledge, work hard, and opportunities will follow

What are some must-experience classes at IIT Bombay?

SB
Susmita Bose Posted On : March 1st, 2021
Studied at Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay

A friend of mine attended IIT Bombay and one particular subject that left him in awe was the Abstractions and Paradigms in Programming from the first year introductory department course from computer science. This particular course opened new horizons on programming for him.

The course began from functional programming, imperative and carried on to object orient and so on. These programmings were carried on in schemes. Now, this functional programming language, which happens to be entirely new to be figured out, holds an entirely different sort of excitement for anyone who has worked on C++ all their lives.

It makes you realize programming doesn't have a particular pattern, instead has such wide horizons that require to be explored. Just imagine it as someone who has removed patches from your eyes and you've witnessed an incredibly new dimension altogether. This course bears the evidence that Computer Science is so much more than mare programming.

This particular professor associated with CS studies is one of the best professors around India. His name is Prof. Amitabha Sanyal. By simply working around him- whether with any lab assignments, brainstorming over further projects, or just by listening to him in his class, you can learn a lot of things.

When my friend started at IIT Bombay, it was pretty much the same for him as it is for any JEE fresher. He had no clue about the experiences IIT was about to drench him in. You probably won't find the first-year course that interesting but you'd get used to it. If you participate in extracurricular activities, you're going to have so much fun.

My friend started taking this course in the 2nd semester at IIT Bombay. This interest finally led him to do his Ph.D. in - Computer Science.

This is beneficial for job opportunities since companies look at the subjects you've studied during your academic tenure.

Regarding Aerospace Structure, the subjects offered in this specialization are quite similar to the machine design stream of the mechanical engineering department. The curriculum also includes state-of-the-art subjects related to composite materials. All the professors in this field are renowned experts in their respective areas.
