Are BHU and IIT BHU the same institute ?

TG
Tejaswani Guha Posted On : June 16th, 2022
B.Sc from Banaras Hindu University

Although BHU and IIT BHU share the same campus, these are not the same. BHU is a central university that consists of many faculties and departments. IIT BHU used to be a part of BHU until it become an IIT. Now, it is an autonomous institute and works independently according to the IIT rules and regulations. BHU authority doesn’t have any authority over the management and decision of IIT BHU.

But these two institutes share some common campus facilities such as auditorium, badminton-squash court, swimming pool, etc.

What is the latest branch change criteria at IIT (BHU)?

OB
Oindrila Bose Posted On : June 16th, 2023
Studied at IIT BHU (2019)

As per the latest branch change criteria at IIT BHU, the number of incoming students to a branch after a branch change should not surpass 10% of the current students in that branch. For instance, if the Mechanical branch has 87 students enrolled in the first year, then the number of students that can change their branch to Mechanical is 10% of 87 = 8.7. Then 8 students are eligible for branch change from Mechanical

The application for branch change is usually invited after the end of the first year.

What should I choose between IIT BHU CSE and IIT Guwahati Maths and Computing?

BG
Bidita Ghose Posted On : May 3rd, 2023
Lives in Bengaluru, Karnataka, India

Both IIT BHU CSE and IIT Guwahati MnC are excellent options and the choice of the branch is a personal matter depending on the candidate's preferences rather than the credibility of the branch. Here are a few parameters on which we can draw a general comparison between the two courses.

  • Course structure: IIT Guwahati’s MnC program has a well-structured curriculum with the perfect blend of Computer Science, finance, and Mathematics courses. By the end of the program, you will be eligible to sit for software as well as finance placements. IIT BHU CSE too is known for its flexible course structure with a plethora of electives to choose from.
  • Coding culture: Undoubtedly, IITBHU has a better coding culture than IIT Guwahati. The ambiance is quite competitive at BHU if that’s what you are after. However, MnC too is gaining popularity and the decreasing opening rank can be seen as a proof of the same.
  • Peer group: High JEE rankers prefer IIT Guwahati over IIT BHU and thus the peer group of IIT Guwahati is more refined and superior in quality.
  • Campus and student life: IIT Guwahati has an amazing campus and its students get to live a very dynamic and lively college life. IIT-BHU’s campus on the other hand is underdeveloped and you can also find student politics here. IIT Guwahati is the best choice for nature lovers who like solace and peace while IIT BHU is for those who want to experience city life as well.
  • Student life: Both institutes have great clubs and activities to promote the holistic development of students. Students are allotted single rooms right from the first year at IIT Guwahati which is different from IIT BHU. Mess food is better at BHU. IIT Guwahati is a clear winner in sports, cultural and technical clubs, etc.
  • Placements: Both institutes have equally good placement scenarios with major recruiters like Microsoft, Google, Tower Research, Flipkart, etc. visiting both these campuses. CS and MnC students receive similar placement offers and in fact, being in MnC makes you eligible for both finance as well as software jobs.

Both the institutes and branches have their own strengths and weaknesses and the final decision should be based on what you want from your degree. If it’s a competitive environment you are after, go for IIT BHU, while if it’s a rich college life experience you want, then IIT Guwahati is your destination.

EE at IIT (BHU), Varanasi is considered one of the best branches in India and has a lot to offer in terms of opportunities and academics.

  • Curriculum: The curriculum comprises diverse subjects like Material Science, Power Electronics, Electrical Machines, Digital Design, Algorithms, and others. The curriculum exposes you to the trending fields and tends to break the monotony of the subjects taught.
  • Faculty: The EE department at IIT (BHU), Varanasi has a pool of experienced faculty like Dr. S. K. Nagar, Dr. R. Mahanty, Dr. R. K. Saket, Mr. Manish Kumar, Mr. J. C. Pandey and others. Their pedagogy might not be very modern but the way they deliver the concepts is great. Also, they are very approachable and pay heed to your queries.
  • Research: At the UG level research is restricted to your BTech thesis only m. You will get to do projects in your department occasionally. But if you are a research aspirant you can approach a professor and start your research work right from 2nd year itself
  • Campus life: The BHU campus is surrounded by lush greenery and has a surreal ambiance. The student body comprises genius minds that'll help you grow as a person. You will be surprised to know that EE also has its own annual festival, Prastuti.
  • Placements: EE students are approached by many recruiters who come for ECE and CSE students in addition to their own companies. Some of the top recruiters of this department are Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, Broadcom, Samsung, etc. The trick to secure good placements is to acquire additional skills in the areas such as Programming, VLSI, Power Electronics, etc

Overall, the IIT BHU EE department is well-regarded and is a good choice for engineering aspirants.
