Which is better NIT Jamsedhpur, NIT Raipur, NIT K,NIT Hamirpur, NIT Durgapur, NIT Jalandhar, DTU, NSIT or IIEST Shibpur?

PS

There is nothing called a better college. One college can be good for you but bad for others. Similarly a college can be bad for someone else but perfect for you. Every college has its own flaws. So it depends on how much you are willing to overlook and get the best results.

Still if I have to make a choice among the above colleges, I will go for NIT Hamirpur. The peaceful ambiance and beautiful infrastructure is worth it.

Which hostels are given to M.Tech students in IIEST Shibpur and how are the rooms?

NS
Niharika Singh Posted On : March 2nd, 2021
Studied at Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology, Shibpur (2019)

For M.tech students the hostels are provided as per the distance of their homes. Male candidates would get a downing hall of residence, Hostel 15 and then PG. Hostel 15 is quite spacious and you will be getting beautiful scenarios outside the hostel. The downing hall is a bit congested as more number of students are accommodated in one hall. PG hostel is similar to hostel 15 only it is bit congested but it is better than downing hall. You will get PG hostel in the second year you will get Downing hall and hostel 15 in your first year. For female candidates the accommodation is given at Sister Nivedita hall.

You will get a bed, locker, and table individually in each room. There are a total of 11 rooms on each floor. Each floor has got 2 hi speed wifi routers. Some hostels also have paid canteens. There is an RO water cooler in the mess. Overall the hostels are pretty good considering it is a government college. You will also be sharing rooms with B.tech students.

I am mentioning below the complete breakdown of academic fee-structure for M.Tech at IIEST Shibpur-

For OC/OBC/EWS candidates, the first semester fee is Rs. 42,500. This includes Rs. 3000 as refundable caution deposit. For the remaining three semesters, you’ll have to pay Rs. 39,500 per semester.

This amount includes Rs. 500 registration fee, Rs. 500 for student activity and others, Rs. 2500 as infrastructure maintenance fee, Rs. 35,000 as tuition fee, and Rs. 1000 as examination fee.

For SC/ST/PwD candidates, the tuition fee (Rs. 35,000) is completely waived off. So they need to pay Rs. 7500 in the first semester, and Rs. 4500 each, for the remaining three semesters.

This is the detailed fee structure for M.Tech at IIEST Shibpur. This only includes the academic fees. The mess and hostel charges are separate.

How is the mechanical engineering department in IIEST, Shibpur as compared to departments like EE and ETC (placement and research-wise)?

SG
Sneha Ghosh Posted On : March 12th, 2021
Bachelor of Engg. Electrical Engineering, Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology, Shibpur (2018)

IIEST, Shibpur formerly known as BESU is doing really well in all the departments. Whether it is about faculty or infrastructure it is growing steadily and gradually.

But as one wants to take a deeper look in comparing mechanical engineering, EE and ETC, let’s take a look on it:

  • The research facility of the mechanical engineering department is quite decent and comparable with EE and ETC.
  • It is even better at some aspects like it has research collaboration with some of the renowned foreign universities, some of the excellent facilities etc.
  • When IIEST, Shibpur was known as BESU even then the mechanical engineering was considered to be the highest ranking department in one of these three departments.
  • Also, one cannot forget to boast of tremendous alumni including a couple of directors of IITs.

  • When it comes to placement, the mechanical engineering department has a decent placement record so far.
  • ME and EE have almost equal numbers of core placements. And ETC has less core placements but the highest package is grabbed by ETC itself.
  • The placement for mechanical engineering is really good though. Core companies such as Maruti Suzuki, CESC, Vedanta, coal India, Tata steel, Bridge and Roof, L&T, elegant marine services come on campus.
  • So you can easily expect a very bright future of mechanical engineering graduates from IIEST SHIBPUR.
  • After becoming an IIEST the placements have improved and after 5 years it will improve more.
  • IIEST, Shibpur has always been known for its excellent core teachings. Also, it has one of the best and oldest labs in the country in EE and Mech which has been improved from time to time.

The college is very good for students interested in any of the three departments as mentioned. All the three mentioned departments are very good in IIEST. The thing that matters is your interest and will.

IIEST, Shibpur

I am a first year B.Tech mechanical student at IIEST Shibpur. I will try providing some information about my department.

It is one of the best departments at IIEST. The faculty members are highly qualified, and their teaching methods are really good. They are actively engaged in research, and will happily encourage your research ideas on being approached.

The department performs decently well during placement season. Last year, 61 out of 75 B.Tech mechanical students were successfully placed. Companies like Tata Steel, CESC and Hyundai visit the department, and offer good packages to students.

IIEST has been known for its excellent teaching of core branches. Its EE and mechanical branches have one of the oldest and best labs in India. You can rest assured that the mechanical branch of this college is a pretty good one.

What are some helpful tips for students starting their first year at IIEST Shibpur?

SG
Saunak Guha Posted On : March 5th, 2021
B.Tech from Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology, Shibpur (2020)

Here are some useful tips which may come in handy during your time at the institute.

Academics:

It is the most important factor. From the first year itself, you need to maintain a CGPA of 8.5. If you wish to top your class, you need to study regularly. If you do not study on a regular basis make sure to start preparing at least 2-3 weeks prior to examination. Solve previous years’ questions so that you don’t repent later. Interact with sincere seniors. Their experience can be helpful. Make sure to collect previous year’s questions, questions are usually repeated.

VT or Internships:

During placement, recruiters ask for internship experiences. Apply for internships preferably in a government institute after completing 1st or 2nd year of your course. You will get the information on the official website. Ask your seniors too. They can also provide useful information. Vocational training is important for core branches. You can do your vocational training in any industry like thermal power plants or steel plants.

CV:

Try to build a strong CV. You can go for Tedx, it has good international recognition. Participate in big fests and try to win, these look good on a CV.

Sports:

The institute does not place much focus on sports. But you should try to participate in games and sports. There are inter hostel, inter-department tournaments, and also fests organized by halls and hostels.

Seminars:

Try to attend seminars on the topics that interest you. If you are interested in competitive examinations like GATE, CAT, or others attending seminars organized by coaching institutes will be a big help.

Hope these tips will help you.
