KN
Karuna Nair Posted On : March 13th, 2023
M.B.A. in Marketing, SVKM's NMIMS (Graduated 2017)

If you want to achieve self-satisfaction by gaining maximum knowledge about your research area, a Ph.D. could be a great way to do so. Consider coming to IIT Bombay if you are always enthusiastic about learning something new and doing something innovative. Your work will depend on your area and how far you can reach in the industry. For example, if your area is controlled, you can reach many consulting firms or industries that deal with automation problems. In fact, my lab deals with many industrial problems related to such issues. Your work will be recognized as an asset for IITB, and research is the foremost thing that every professor looks forward to.

Apart from that, you can enjoy a good life as a Ph.D. student here, with the freedom to think in many directions and develop your research skills at your own pace. A Ph.D. degree from IIT Bombay is well-recognized. Many of the students, who are doing their Ph. D.s here in controls, are well settled abroad or in India, which proves the worth of this degree.

A friend of mine got CSE at IIT Bombay with a rank of 10k. How is it justified?

AT
Ashok Tak Posted On : March 7th, 2023
Lived in India

The IITs are funded by the Government so it has complete authority to give admission to anyone. The teachers or the students are not the stakeholders in the case of IITs. It is the Government that pays the teachers' salaries and installs the various facilities. The Government is at complete freedom to decide who can come into ITs and who needs a push in the form of the reservation to join ITs.

The aspirants know beforehand that the Government has set such rules according to its own discretion. No one is forced to give the exam and you can always choose any other option if you think it’s unfair.

Here is a video giving you an honest review of the institute

Aspirants know that there might be cases where a candidate with 10k or above rank will get admission in contrast to the general cutoff. They still fill out firms in hope of clearing the exam. You are precisely giving a Government Exam and need to follow all the necessary rules. So it indeed is justified if someone with a 10k rank is able to make it into IIT Bombay.

Where are you placed after getting an M.Tech degree from IIT Bombay?

AJ
Advait Joshi Posted On : March 17th, 2023
Lives in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India

You may find inspiration in the story of a student who completed his MTech from IIT Bombay and landed a job in one of the biggest companies, NVIDIA. During his graduation, he was often found at the back of the class and only attended for the sake of attendance. No one considered him as a competition when it came to technical discussions and programming.

After completing his graduation, he chose to appear for GATE as he did not receive any job offers from his college. He devoted a year to prepare for GATE and achieved an astounding feat. He secured AIR 172 in GATE 2017, earning himself direct admission into IIT Bombay without any quota or reservation.

During the placement season, he invested all his focus and determination to secure a job, and his hard work paid off when he received an offer from NVIDIA.

This student's story is a testament to the fact that success is not just about innate talent or abilities. It's about hard work, dedication, and perseverance. Even if you do not start at the top, with enough determination and effort, you can reach new heights.

If you are in a similar position as the student in this story, do not lose hope. Keep working hard and improving yourself, and success will surely come your way. Do not let others' perceptions of you or your past define your future. It's never too late to start working towards your goals and achieve them with hard work and dedication.

Why do some students in IIT Bombay leave high-paying jobs and join grad schools for PhD?

AJ
Advait Joshi Posted On : March 23rd, 2023
Lives in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India

It’s highly illogical to question why some students in IIT leave high-paying jobs and join graduate schools for Ph.D. This is because some people tend to do whatever makes them happy rather than following the sheep mentality. They don’t consider money as the only source of happiness. And they know that a high-paying job will rob them of mental peace due to a lot of responsibilities they might not even enjoy. So they choose a happier and simpler part which is pursuing a Ph.D.

Another major reason why people may pursue a Ph.D. rather than working at a top company is their strong inclination to words academics, and they may not be satisfied with a bachelor's degree and crave higher studies in the form of PhD. Basically, the reason behind such a decision is subjective and depends solely On the particular individual, and cannot be objectified.

The common reason why people make such a decision is that they have more interest in studies and doing a job would hinder that passion. Doing a Ph.D. gives you opportunities to travel and enjoy life generally. That being said, it's not necessary that a Ph.D. is easy for everyone. It strictly depends upon one’s preferences and capabilities.

How is the metallurgical engineering and materials science programme at IIT Bombay compared to the other programmes?

SB
Sumit Bose Posted On : March 17th, 2023
IIT Bombay (2019)

Material Science and Metallurgical Engineering (MEMS) is a highly funded branch in IIT Bombay, and it's a misconception that it's not a good branch just because its cutoffs are high. In fact, Material Science is the most demanded branch at MIT. However, it's essential to note that each branch is unique in its way, and the only thing that matters is your interest.

MEMS teaches engineering aspects of metals, their properties, and engineering problems faced while extracting them, while material science focuses on customizing materials according to your needs. Materials play an essential role in various processes, and you need to alter properties like viscosity, strength, hardness, resistance to temperature, etc. Material science plays a crucial role in developing such materials.

The branch you choose does not determine your success; it's your commitment and passion toward that branch that matters. So, choose a branch based on your interest and passion, not just packages, to excel in it.

Are you enjoying your life in IIT Bombay?

PG
Pratik Gandhi Posted On : March 17th, 2023
B.Tech. CSE, IIT Bombay

Yes, absolutely. Life at IIT Bombay is extremely enjoyable. If you want to enjoy your life at IITB, here are some tips that you may find helpful:

  • Don't listen to others, especially when someone is giving you unnecessary advices. Not each one of the pieces of advice can be beneficial for you, so it's important to do what you want to do and not waste your non-academic time.
  • Don't worry about what others think of you. It's important to ignore people who are not good for you and live your life the way you want to.
  • Focus on building a great set of friends who you enjoy spending time with. Quality is more important than quantity when it comes to friendships.
  • If you don't feel like you need to attend every summit or cultural or sports event, then don’t. Do the things that interest you and bring you joy, rather than being guided by anyone.
  • Develop good study habits and study regularly throughout the week.
  • Take time on the weekends to do things you enjoy, like watching movies, going out, talking to friends and family, or exploring your hobbies and interests.

Remember that it's important to not do things under peer pressure. Stay true to yourself and do what makes you happy, even if it's not what others expect of you. If you do so, you are going to enjoy your life at IIT Bombay to the fullest.
