For female Civil Engineering graduates, is it worth studying in NICMAR?

TA
Tithi Aggrawal Posted On : May 18th, 2023
Lives in New Delhi

The placement record of NICMAR is not 100%, but still impressive at 85%. However, the number of companies visiting the campus has reduced after Demonetization, which is a concern for a candidate’s placement prospects. Having work experience is an advantage, but it is not a deal-breaker as some freshers with ordinary CGPA have also secured good placements.

The decision to study at NICMAR should depend on one's confidence in their skills, as it is considered the best techno-management college in the country, with updated courseware that meets industry demands. The campus life is also vibrant, with many activities and clubs.

There is no bias towards female students at NICMAR, and they comprise about 25-30% of the total strength.

How do I get into NICMAR?

AD
Aditi Deshpande Posted On : May 18th, 2023

To gain admission into NICMAR, you should:

  • First inquire about the exam dates and application process from the college authority.
  • Then write the written exam and score higher than the cut-off.
  • Participate in a group discussion, and attend a personal interview.
  • If your performance so far has been acceptable, then you will be able to get into NICMAR.

Do not choose NICMAR, as the institute has lost its value in the industry due to the current management's focus on business rather than students' placements.

For example, there was a student pursuing the ACM course in Goa who was not placed during campus placement and was only offered a job off-campus for a package of 3 lakh rupees, which is pretty low. This suggests that the current market scenario in the construction industry is not favorable, and big companies are cutting costs and minimizing resources. Investing in NICMAR might not be financially beneficial. Look into a quantity estimation course in Hyderabad instead.

But there are some advantages that you can take out if you want to work at L&T. It offers placements to NICMAR students, and they offer a position of post-graduate engineering trainee in the beginning. It is a mid-level management position.

The salary offered ranges from about 6 - 7 lac per annum, but it keeps on increasing as the inflation rate rises in the country. Apart from this profile, L&T does hire for other profiles as well, like execution contracts and planning.

How many times does NICMAR take admissions?

KS
Kanika Sharma Posted On : May 18th, 2023
Studied at National Institute of Construction Management and Research, Pune

The institute conducts admissions in three rounds: 1st, 2nd, and last (but this can change in the future).

  • The first round of admissions usually takes place around November-December, with the maximum number of students participating during this round. The entrance exam for this round takes place in January.
  • The second round of admissions opens in January-February, with the entrance exam taking place in April-May.
  • The final or third round of admissions opens in May, with interviews and entrance tests being conducted in June. The session usually starts in the first half of July.

The difference between these rounds is that the first round has test centers across the country, and all campuses and courses are open. The second and third rounds are conducted in Pune only, and the Pune campus is usually the first to fill up.

What are the pros and cons of joining ACM in NICMAR?

KS
Kanika Sharma Posted On : May 25th, 2023
Studied at National Institute of Construction Management and Research, Pune

NICMAR's experience makes it hard to balance pros and cons.

Pros:

  • NICMAR Pune students are wonderful. You'll see people from across the nation. Different cultures, languages, and traditions under one roof. Great exposure.
  • Alumni Power: Over 15,000 NICMAR alumni are engaged on social media. AGNI is the industry-changing Global Alumni Platform.
  • Well-Structured Syllabus: All courses have industry-leading syllabuses. Subjects span the construction industry. The syllabus contains a good combination of technical and management disciplines, but many subjects are lacking.
  • Placements: No other college in the nation can recruit over 100 construction companies for campus recruitment. A great strength.
  • Campus life: Countless ethnic festivals, thousands of events, frequent club meets, 4 main fests. Live the NICMAR Pune campus life.

Cons:

  • Intake: NICMAR's intake has been rising over 6–8 years. The tide appears unstoppable. 1300+ students have degraded the institution and hurt placements.
  • ROI: Average Packages are falling every year, hence ROI is gone. Two or three years ago, it wasn't. It was justifiable with 600 applicants and 10 Lakhs in fees. No more.
  • Faculty Quality: Some prominent faculty have joined RICS or other competing institutes. Students think most NICMAR instructors are below average.
  • Placements: Companies have various options due to the huge candidate pool. L&T receives about 400 applications. Thus, the company largely relies on Resume Shortlisting and just a few students get to sit for process.

Finally, is the course worth it?

Depending on the student and expectations, yes or no.

If you have an education loan and want to find a nice company with a good package, choose a good placement agency. They charge less and give you more.

If you're a student seeking personal and professional growth. Yes. The college won't help, but it's nice. Grow yourself. Teaching, research, and crowd support are below average.
