IIT Roorkee Saharanpur campus was established in 2001. The School of Paper Technology was established by the Indian Government in 1964. It merged with the University of Roorkee in 1978 and was later renamed as IIT Roorkee, Saharanpur campus.

The campus is well-equipped with modern facilities and laboratories fostering a robust academic environment. Through online courses, IIT Roorkee aims to provide quality education to global students who cannot access in-class learning. These courses are flexible and can be completed as per the student's liking. The E-Learning Centre (ELC) of IIT Roorkee is responsible for creating and maintaining the online courses. It offers a total of 970 courses through departments like. 235 new courses were added recently.

The current director of IIT Roorkee is Prof. Kamal Kishor Pant. He became the director of IIT Roorkee on October 12, 2022. He is a recognised scientist with Stanford University identifying him as the top 2% scientist in his field. 

He is a PhD holder in chemical engineering. He previously was Chair Professor of Petrotech Chair and Federation of Indian Petroleum Industries (FIPI), Chairman of GATE and JAM and Chairman, Library, Head of the Department of Chemical Engineering, and Dean of Faculty at the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi.
