The Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies (NMIMS) has now agreed to offer students another chance for the special exam after they complained that the new evaluation method is responsible for their failure.

NMIMS Gives Students Another Exam Chance

New Delhi: After some students claimed that the Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies' (NMIMS) new evaluation procedure was to blame for their failures, NMIMS agreed to give them a second shot on the special exam. The management asserts that at the beginning of the academic year, the students were informed of NMIMS's lack of an ATKT policy.

The new assessment policy of NMIMS's Anil Surendra Modi School of Commerce requires students to repeat a year if they fail an exam rather than being allowed to keep terms and reappear for the subject in the following academic year. It has been complained about by many of the affected students and their parents to the governor and chief minister of Maharashtra.

On May 2, 2023, they had also demonstrated in front of the NMIMS Mumbai campus. Again, they met with the vice chancellor and reported to the University Grants Commission (UGC) about the situation.

NMIMS Vice-Chancellor Dr. Ramesh Bhatt wrote in an email response sent on Monday, "Our evaluation policy is a vital aspect of our commitment to academic achievement. We think that by upholding strong academic standards, we can help our students to reach their full potential and become ready for success in future. All students are welcome to participate in our quest for greatness and use our tools to help them succeed academically”.

According to Dr. Bhatt's letter, students are assessed on how well they perform on exams, and they are given plenty of chances to do better by taking remedial classes and retaking tests. "Students have the option to request revaluation by impartial topic experts. These pupils have utilised two examination opportunities as well as two opportunities for reassessment", according to the letter. Dr. Bhatt

added that NMIMS has the freedom to set its own rules, regulations, and procedures because the institute has been accorded deemed-to-be university status by the UGC. Regarding claims that NMIMS is out to make money, he stated that if a student chooses readmission, just 25% of the course price is collected. "A small cost of INR 500 per topic must be paid if a student chooses to sit for the exam again the following year.

According to the NMIMS School of Commerce, students have five years to complete all of their coursework". While this is going on, a student who is also a complainant in the case asserted that NMIMS does not offer the chance to repeat the exam using the ATKT system, despite every university offering this option.

Additionally, NMIMS has a guideline which specifies that if a student has a revaluation rise of more than 15% to 20%, the overall marks won't change. The majority of students who asked for reevaluations didn't perceive an improvement in their grades. For instance, the Hyderabad campus asserted that despite receiving improved grades, six out of the 18 students who failed a direct taxation paper and requested a reevaluation did not notice a difference in their results.

The student further claimed that because of online evaluation, most answer sheets were not properly reviewed and the marks were not assigned appropriately. Additionally, two months prior to the exam, one of the faculty members at the Hyderabad site who taught direct taxation left mid-way without finishing the syllabus. We had no one for the topic for two months. However, according to Dr. Bhatt, at the orientation session held at the start of the programme, the students were informed of the passing standards, promotion guidelines, and the "no ATKT" policy, which was also followed by the other schools at NMIMS.
