Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE) has observed an increase in the NIRF Ranking 2020, recording 8th rank in the Universities category. It has been consistently ranked at the NIRF owing to world-class quality of education imparted by the institute. Subsequently, MAHE, popularly known as Manipal University received the Institute of Eminence (IoE) status, awarded by UGC.
In 2020, National Institute of Ranking Framework (NIRF) Rankings were virtually released by honorable HRD Minister, Sri Ramesh Pokhriyal 'Nishank' on June 11 owing to the COVID-19 pandemic. MAHE Manipal has been ranked based on NIRF’s adopted methodology to rank institutions across the nation based on 7 pre-defined parameters.
The parameters include Teaching, Learning and Resources, Research and Professional Practices, Graduation Outcomes, Outreach and Inclusivity and Perception.

Since its inception, MAHE’s rankings have been consistently projecting a steady growth specifically for the NIRF rankings. As the aforementioned data suggests, in the category of top universities in India, MAHE has been positioned 8th in 2020 climbing up from the 9th rank as in 2019.
MAHE is a Deemed University and has been awarded ranking among the top 10 universities of India. This shows the immense contribution of the quality of education and facilities offered to students. Likewise, the overall ranking category also showcases MAHE at the 14th rank, a step-up from the 16th as of 2019.

MAHE Receives Institutes of Eminence (IoE) Status
Earlier, in view of the remarkable performance of MAHE, this Deemed University was awarded with the status of Institute of Eminence by UGC in 2018. Institution of Eminence (IoE) is a scheme introduced by University Grants Commission (UGC) in 2017.
About 20 universities in India have been bestowed with this recognition till 2019. Such universities are granted autonomy, and added benefits of academic collaboration with globally renowned universities.
The IoE scheme was introduced in the Union Budget of India, 2016 by the then Finance Minister, Arun Jaitley with the purpose of empowering Higher Education Institutions that offer world-class teaching and research opportunities to students.
Benefits of IoE Status
UGC earmarked the guidelines while appointing Empowered Expert Committee (EEC) to select the best institutions in the country and continue monitoring them, thereafter. According to the IoE guidelines, recognised Higher Education Institutions will receive benefits as enlisted below:
- Receive fundings as much as INR 1000 Cr.
- Selective institutions may receive autonomous status.
- IoEs will have autonomy to invest the allotted funds in areas as per requirement; subject to their status and General Financial Rules (GFR).
- Institutions can independently frame merit-based systems for admission.
- IoEs to maintain a Faculty Student Ratio of 1:20 during notification and needs to be increased to 1:10 within 5 years.
- Permitted to admit foreign students based on merit subject of a maximum 30% of the total strength.
- Autonomy to develop curriculum and syllabus
- Autonomy to offer online courses as part of their programs with restriction of maximum 20% to be via online mode. Certificate courses can be held in online mode only.
MAHE’s NIRF Ranking 2020 Reach Heights: Contribution of MAHE Colleges
MAHE’s NIRF ranking does not remain bounded by the individual contribution of the university. Its colleges have collaterally contributed to reach this exemplary feat. MAHE’s colleges that have received prominence in the NIRF Ranking 2020 are:
Manipal College of Dental Sciences, Manipal was ranked at the 2nd position in the country in the Dental category. About 30 dental colleges have been ranked in this category. Among them, Manipal College of Medical Dental Sciences, Mangalore was awarded the 6th position.
Similarly, Manipal College of Pharmaceutical Sciences maintained its 7th position since 2019, receiving a score of 67.42 out of 100. About 75 pharmacy colleges in India have been ranked in the category.
Kasturba Medical College, Manipal stood at 9th rank in Mangalore while receiving a whooping 21st rank among the Medical Colleges in India. About 40 medical Colleges of India have been ranked in the Medical category. The institute received a 53.83 out of the total score of 100.
Meanwhile, Manipal School of Architecture and Planning was ranked 12th among 20 institutes ranked in the Architecture category. School of Architecture and Planning, MAHE received a total score of 53.11 out of 100. Lastly, Manipal Institute of Technology ranked at 45th position at NIRF Ranking 2020 in the Engineering category. MIT scored 49.06 (out of 100) among 200 engineering colleges of India.
