New Delhi: Madras University sought to rebuild its regional language departments' status and recruit more students to these programmes by providing job opportunities. During the COVID-19 epidemic, digitization in all sectors accelerated, and consumption of regional language information surged dramatically.
UG and PG programs at Madras University are available in English, Hindi, Kannada, Tamil, Malayalam, Telugu, Arabic, Urdu, and Sanskrit. Except for Tamil, all other departments have a low student attendance.
According to officials, Madras University is attempting to encash on the opportunity by offering consulting services to corporates and IT firms. The university is now attempting to discover firms that work in the language-related domain, with the intention of approaching them for initiatives.
S Gowri, Madras University's vice-chancellor, stated that Covid has considerably accelerated India's digital adoption. People from rural regions have begun to use online services, and regional content consumption is higher than ever.
Gowri stated, “Companies are trying their best to translate their English content into regional languages so that they can widen their reach. And I see this as an opportunity for our students. We are trying to provide consultancy services to some companies for translating their content from English to the south Indian languages”.
According to officials, India's local language demands are increasing since many firms are working on language services and completely new solutions, and these startups are also receiving considerable investment.

A faculty of the Tamil department said, “With the help of artificial intelligence (AI), the startups are translating English content to regional languages. Our regional language students can help these companies in creating better and more accurate content”.
The university also intends to adapt the curriculum based on feedback from the corporate sector in order to make students more market-ready.
