New Delhi: A recent study has revealed that only 57% of B.Tech students, studying Civil Engineering across 10 IITs in India managed to secure campus placements in 2020-21.
An RTI was filed with all the 23 IITs in India to find out about the placement packages. 13 IITs responded to that and 10 IITs were selected to understand how B.Tech Civil Engineering packages vary from one to another IITs. As the data showed, Civil Engineering has one of lowest placement records across IITs and also NITs.
As per the data, many B.Tech Civil Engineering students did not even participate in the campus placement, organised by the institutes. There seems to be a large gap between the average packages received by the other engineering students from the institutions and that of the Civil Engineering students.

Civil Engineering Placement Report Findings: Package Comparison
As per the data, the gap between packages received by the students from other engineering branches and that by the Civil Engineering branches is huge. The following table shows the comparison:

Civil Engineering Placement Report Findings: Salary Comparison
Not just the average placement record, the maximum and minimum salary packages also vary a lot for the Civil Engineering students. The following table shows some of the institutes’ maximum and minimum salary packages:
Civil Engineering Placement Report Findings from State Universities
To understand whether this problem extends at the regional level also, some of the state universities were also asked to participate in the study. The three colleges under Anna University, Tamil Nadu, were:
- College of Engineering (CoE), Anna University
- Madras Institute of Technology
- Alagappa College of Technology
Only CoE offered Civil Engineering subject and the research findings are as followed:
- Out of 89 students, only 7 students from English medium and 1 student from Tamil medium received placements
- The average salary was 4.58 LPA for the English medium students and 4.4 for the Tamil one.
