New Delhi: The Centre for Indian Knowledge System and Mental Health Application (IKSHMA) at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT Mandi) has introduced M.S. (by research) and PhD programs in Music and Musopathy. The application window for the courses is open and the registration deadline is July 15, 2024.

The newly launched MS and PhD courses are available in both full-time and part-time. You will be able to attend classes in live, online, or in a hybrid format, regardless of geographical location.
The programs have been aimed at producing highly skilled professionals and researchers who can contribute meaningfully to the development and understanding of music and its beneficial impacts on individuals and society, including the wellness-centric field of Musopathy.
Speaking about the new programme, Professor Laxmidhar Behera, Director, IIT Mandi, said, "IIT Mandi is committed to developing science and technology relevant to the Indian knowledge system. The MS and PhD programmes in Music and Musopathy represent another significant step in this endeavour. This program will not only explore the science of Indian music, but also its therapeutic value for the holistic well-being of mind, body, and consciousness."
The courses will be taught by celebrity advisors like icons of music, dance, and science such as Padma Vibhushan Awardee Dr Sonal Mansingh, percussion maestro Prof Trichy Sankaran, Professor Emeritus, York University, Canada, and the preeminent scientist Dr Gautam Desiraju, Prof Emeritus, IISc Bangalore. Chitravina N Ravikiran has helped design parts of the programme in collaboration with the premier music education portal, www.acharyanet.com.
According to Ms Sowmya Acharya, Founder and CEO of Acharyanet.com, expressed her enthusiasm about collaboration with IIT Mandi, stating, “It is an honor to collaborate with a premier institution like IIT Mandi in this unique program that bridges the worlds of arts and science, wellness and health.”
Who are Eligible for the MS, PhD in Music and Musopathy Course?
The eigiblity criteria will follow the general outlines laid down by IIT Mandi for general MS and PhD courses. Along with this, we have listed the other eligibility criteria below:
- Traditional degrees from recognized universities (e.g., Acharya) are considered equivalent to bachelor's and master's degrees in engineering, sciences, arts, and social sciences.
- Degrees from accredited music institutions such as Kalakshetra, Chennai, Gandharva Maha Vidyalaya, Delhi, Chennai Govt Music College etc. after 3 years of Music Education.
- Additional requirements may be imposed by the committee as needed, including Acharyanet and other certifications after 2/3 years of study and All India Radio ratings for performing artists.
