IIT Madras introduces training program for Karnataka police to train them for conducting structured and scientific investigations into road traffic accidents.
New Delhi: The Centre of Excellence for Road Safety (CoERS) of IIT Madras organised a special three-day training program in Mysore for the Karnataka State Police. This program aimed to help police officers improve their skills in investigating Road Traffic Accidents (RTAs). The program focused on usage of tool called the 'Root Cause Analysis Matrix' (RCAM) to understand the reasons behind road accidents better.
RCAM method helps the police to look at different factors, such as human behavior, vehicle conditions, and road safety measures, to understand why an accident happened. The officers also learned how to collect data from the accident scene, analyse it, and communicate their findings effectively.
Prof. Venkatesh Balasubramanian, Head, CoERS and RBG Labs, Department of Engineering Design, IIT Madras said, “A scientific approach to enforcement in road safety is an essential requirement to formulate preventive interventions to reduce the occurrence of crashes. RCAM provides a structured methodology to investigate the root causes of a crash based on a 3M&E model. This methodology enables factual collection of human, vehicle and property damage data and performs evidence-based design of interventions for improving road safety.”
Key Benefits of the Training
The following are the key advantages of the IIT Madras three-day training program:
- Using RCAM for Crash Investigation: The RCAM method helps officers conduct thorough and structured accident investigations.
- Scientific Approach: The training encourages using data-driven and scientific methods to find ways to prevent future accidents.
- Understanding Human Factors: Officers learned how different human behaviours can lead to accidents, helping them better understand the causes.
- Improving Investigation Skills: The training aimed to improve the ability of officers to conduct detailed investigations, including looking into fatalities.
Importance of the Training
Alok Kumar, the Additional Director General of Police for Training and Road Safety in Karnataka spoke about the importance of this training. He said that it is essential for investigating officers to have an open mind when gathering information about crashes. By using scientific methods and accurate data collection, the police can identify the real causes of accidents and work on preventing them in the future.
