IIT Kanpurs Training on 5G and Indigenous Networks for DoT Officers

New Delhi: The Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IITK) recently organised a three-day training program focused on "Design and Development of 5G/5G+ Standards and Indigenous 5G Network" for officers from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), Government of India. This program was organized in collaboration with NTIPRIT and TEC, DoT offering a detailed overview of 5G technology and its future advancements. It particularly emphasised the development of India's indigenous 5G network. The program was led by Prof. Rohit Budhiraja, Department of Electrical Engineering, IIT Kanpur.

What did Participants Learn During the IIT Kanpur Training Program?

The participants gained extensive insights into various aspects of 5G technology including the physical layer, network architecture and the intricate processes involved in data transmission from base stations to user equipment. The key topics covered were coding techniques, modulation methods, rate matching and the use of multiple antenna technologies to enhance network performance and efficiency.

What was the Significance of the Focus on Emerging 5G+ Standards?

  • A significant portion of the training was dedicated to the emerging 5G+ standard exploring technologies like Ambient IoT, applications of AI/ML and high-accuracy positioning systems.
  • Participants gained insights into the workings of the 3GPP standardization body and its various working groups.
  • The program provided a forward-looking perspective on the future of wireless communication technologies.

What Practical Experiences did Participants Gain during the Program?

In addition to theoretical sessions, participants had the opportunity to visit the 5G lab at IIT Kanpur. There, they got the opportunity to engage in practical experiments on the live indigenous 5G network. They further enhanced their understanding and skills in deploying and managing advanced telecommunications technologies.

What does the Collaboration Between IIT Kanpur and DoT Signify for India's Telecommunications Future?

The successful completion of this training program underscores a robust partnership between IIT Kanpur and the Department of Telecommunications. This collaboration not only highlights their joint efforts in advancing 5G technology but also positions them as key players in shaping India's future telecommunications landscape.
