The collaboration has led the two institutes to jointly launch academic programs in medical technologies. The startups funded through this collaboration have designed prototypes of advanced healthcare technologies in the past.

At the end of the program, the students earn Biodesign fellowships, ‘Prayas’ grants and startup seed support to build small enterprises.

New Delhi: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT Jodhpur) has collaborated with All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS Jodhpur) have developed a comprehensive multidisciplinary framework to develop deep tech healthcare innovations.

As part of the collaboration, both institutes came together and launched joint academic programs in medical technologies. Students and researchers from engineering, medicine, nursing, bioengineering and allied fields will be able to apply for the programme.

The students in the joint programs go through three phrases of learning- identify, invent and implement. At the end of the program, the students earn Biodesign fellowships, ‘Prayas’ grants and startup seed support to build small enterprises.

The collaboration has also resulted in startup technologies like new syringe design, digital designing, maxillofacial prosthetics, device to correct nasal septal defect without surgery, 3D cell models for precision oncology, non-animal disease models for drugs/formulation testing, nanosensor technologies for early disease diagnosis.

IIT Jodhpur Director Santanu Chaudhary said, “Indian patients receive medical technologies that were created for the developed world and are now adapted for local needs. This method of introducing novel medical technologies in India needs significant improvement as it cannot capture the diverse needs of Indian patients. This collaboration is a step in that direction to bring about solutions to cater to Indian needs.”

The coordinators of the joint MedTech program, Prof. Sushmita Jha (IITJ) and Prof. Shilpi Dixit (AIIMSJ) said “we continuously strive to encourage students to work beyond publishing research papers and build technologies that are needed by patients in India ''
