Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati (IITG) incubated Startup Beta Tank Robotics has developed two robotic solutions that efficiently maintain and clean petroleum tanks eliminating the need of human entry for this hazardous task.

IIT Guwahati

New Delhi: A group of researchers from BetaTANK Robotics, incubated at the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati, has developed cutting-edge robots specifically designed for cleaning oil tanks. This robotics solution will efficiently maintain and clean petroleum tanks eliminating the need for human entry for this hazardous task.

Solutions Developed by BetaTANK Robotics at IIT Guwahati

BetaTANK Robotics embarked on its journey at the Technology Incubation Center (TIC) of IIT Guwahati. Beta Tank has developed the following solution:

  • An innovative robot engineered to address the challenge of cleaning crude oil tank bottom sludge: These robots efficiently clear tank bottom sludge and transfer it to an external receptacle. What sets these robots apart from their global counterparts are three distinctive unique selling points (USPs).
  • An advanced robot designed for water-washing and stripping petrol pump tanks at retail outlets: These robots enter the tank, extend their arms, perform a thorough water wash, and efficiently strip the washings. This streamlined process simplifies the gas-freeing of these tanks, ensuring safety and speed."

Journey of BetaTANK Robotics at IIT Guwahati

According to Prof Senthilmurugan, Chairperson of the IITG - Technology Incubation Centre (IITG- TIC), ”BetaTANK Robotics’ journey, which began at our incubation center in 2019, sets a shining example for what passion, innovation, and the right support network can accomplish. Their success is not only a reflection of their individual brilliance but a testament to the power of the ecosystem we have tirelessly built at IITG-TIC. To fuel the next growth phase, we are actively facilitating crucial investments by engaging in strategic partnerships with esteemed investors aligned with IITG-TIC. Our startups, including BetaTank, enjoy a well-rounded mentorship program that includes wisdom from respected IITG faculty, insights from our accomplished alumni, and hands-on expertise from industry stalwarts at OIL India Limited.”

The robots will be a valuable addition to the Oil industry, making it safer, more cost-effective, and environmentally responsible.

Robotic technology finds extensive applications within the oil and natural gas industry, particularly in scenarios where human intervention presents substantial risks. Major oil companies encounter potential legal liabilities and reputational risks when utilizing human labor for tasks involving petroleum tank access. Beta Tank Robotics, a product of incubation at IITG-Technology Incubation Centre (IITG-TIC) since 2019, offers a solution to mitigate these risks and expedite operational turnarounds and downtime. This startup has received funding through the 'Startup Nurturing, Enabling, and Handholding (SNEH)' initiative of OIL India Limited, part of the Flagship Programme, Start-up India Fund.
