IIMC, which was recently awarded deemed-to-be University status, is making major changes in the institute and all that it offers.

IIMC to Convert Diploma Programs to Degrees and Launch New Master’s Courses from the Academic Session 2024

New Delhi: With its new deemed-to-be University status, the Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC), is planning to add new courses to its roster. Among those courses will be Master’s degree programs in media business management, new media, strategic communication, health communication and media and communication governance.

IIMC also plans to start offering PhD programs as soon as 2024 for IIMC Delhi. Additionally, IIMC has announced plans to convert some of their diploma programs to full-fledged degrees for the benefit of their students.

In addition to the new courses announced, the diplomas offered by IIMC in subjects such as journalism in English, journalism in Hindi, journalism in regional language (including Marathi Urdu, Malayalam, and Odia), digital media, public relations, etc. will also be turned into full-fledged degree courses at the Master’s level.

It will also be exploring the opportunity of lateral entry for students who have graduated the diploma program from the institute, according to an official.

IIMC’s status changed to a deemed-to-be University recently. The status was awarded to IIMC on the advice of the University Grants Commission (UGC) on January 31, 2024. Along with the IIMC Delhi campus, the five regional IIMC campuses in Jammu, Amravati (Maharashtra), Aizawl (Mizoram), Kottayam (Kerala), and Dhenkanal (Odisha) will also be under the deemed-to-be University category.

The change in status affords IIMC the ability to make changes in its infrastructure, its academic opportunities, and how it is governed. One of those changes has resulted in the institute being able to recruit for 20 new assistant professor positions in 2024.

Govind Singh, Dean of Academics at IIMC, said on the new recruitments, “We had actually asked for 40 new positions of assistant professors. But for now, the Ministry of Finance has given [us a] sanction for 20 posts.”

The courses that will be offered by IIMC are said to be unique and capable of fulfilling niches in the academic field of media and communication.
