New Delhi: Nirmala Sitharaman, the Finance Minister of India, inaugurated the Fifth Campus of BITS Pilani Engineering Institute, on February 24, 2024. This expansion will allow the National Institute of Eminence to expand into the fields of management, law, and design.
The campus, which spans over 60 acres and costs INR 1,600 crore, is located in the megapolis's Kalyan area. According to the group chairman and the chancellor of the institute, Kumar Mangalam Birla, the campus can accommodate 5,000 students at its full capacity.
The institute was established in 1964 in Pilani at the Birla family's hometown in Rajasthan's Marwari area. It was one of six private institutions designated as an institute of distinction and currently enrolls 80,000 students across its five campuses in Pilani, Goa, Hyderabad, Dubai, and Kalyan.
The new campus shifts its emphasis from engineering to business school- BITSoM, law school- BITSLAW, and design school- BITSDES.The law and management schools have been operating out of a temporary site in Powai since last year, while the design school only opened its doors this past week.
The Finance Minister announced the opening of the new campus and stated that the institute had produced up to 7,300 Fortune 500 CEOs, 300 internationally renowned professors, and 600 civil servants throughout the years. In addition, it has generated 6,200 startups, and its incubation center has given rise to 170 companies, 30 of which have achieved unicorn status.
