BITS Pilani has recently established the 'Rakesh Kapoor Innovation Centre' to promote entrepreneurship and innovation on October 8. The initiative will serve as a hub for fostering entrepreneurial endeavors and house the PIEDS.
New Delhi: Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS Pilani) has recently launched the 'Rakesh Kapoor Innovation Centre' to foster entrepreneurship. This center was officially inaugurated during an event held at the BITS Pilani campus on October 8, 2023.
According to the BITS Pilani statement, the Rakesh Kapoor Incubation Centre will be dedicated to the promotion of innovation and entrepreneurship. It will also serve as the home for the Pilani Innovation and Entrepreneurship Development Society (PIEDS), established in collaboration with the Department of Science and Technology (DST).
The 'Rakesh Kapoor Innovation Centre' will be equipped with cutting-edge laboratories specializing in emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT), Machine Learning (ML), and Financial Technology (FinTech).
Additionally, the center will house administrative offices for professionals and faculty members actively engaged in incubation activities. Designed by the renowned architect Hafeez Contractor, this expansive facility spans an impressive 40,000 square feet.
The inauguration of the center was inaugurated by Rakesh Kapoor, the former global CEO of Reckitt Plc, in the presence of V Ramgopal Rao, the Vice-Chancellor of BITS Pilani faculty, and Sudhir Kumar Barai, Director of the Pilani campus. Kapoor served as the esteemed chief guest during this inaugural event.
Kapoor Offers Highest Donation to BITS Pilani
Rakesh Kapoor, an alumnus of BITS Pilani who graduated in 1980, has made a historic contribution to his alma mater by donating $1.2 million, which amounts to approximately INR 10 crore, for the establishment of the center at BITS Pilani. This generous donation stands as the most substantial contribution ever received by the university.
Expressing his views on this significant contribution, Kapoor highlighted that Innovation serves as the lifeblood and driving force behind economic and societal advancement.

Being confident that this world-class Innovation Centre will nurture the potential of young engineers and scientists, he said that it will enable them to create innovative products, solutions, and services that will benefit their planet and its inhabitants.
Furthermore, Kapoor expressed his deep satisfaction in knowing that this center will play a pivotal role in fostering a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship that will ultimately serve society at large.
Rao stated that as they launched the Innovation Centre at BITS, they were ushering in a new era in entrepreneurship and innovation.

He mentioned that the facility represented their commitment to promoting collaboration, curiosity, and innovation, and how it would serve as a place where the brightest minds could come together to turn concepts into solutions and aspirations into reality.
During the event, they honored several individuals who had made donations to the university. Among those recognized were entrepreneurs like Anuradha, Prashanth Palakurth, Anurag Jain, Abhinav Asthana, Abhijit Kane, Chaitanya Kalipatnapu, Mukesh Sharma, Kiran Bhat, Rakesh Verma, and members of the 1989, 1993, and 1994 batches.
