New Delhi: The All India Institute Of Medical Science (AIIMS) has been excluded from the list of medical schools that offer the Compulsory Rotating Medical Internship (CRMI) to Foreign Medical Graduates (FMGs), according to the National Medical Commission, as it is outside of their scope.

The commission has requested the medical councils not to allot a seat in AIIMS to any FMG for the mandatory internship. Several FMGs have inquired about incorporating AIIMS before the NMC made its announcement.

The NMC released a state-wise list of medical colleges and institutes recognised and approved for the 12-month CRMI, along with the total number of FMG seats, in February 2023, Regarding the inclusion of AIIMS in the list, the commission claimed that it had received a variety of representations or inquiries.

"The panel has thought over the aforementioned issue, and it has determined that the NMC does not have jurisdiction over AIIMS. As a result, AIIMS shall be removed from the Commission's list”, according to an official notice from NMC.

The commission also stated, "In light of the aforementioned, all state medical councils are requested not to allot any Foreign Medical Graduates in AIIMS to conduct an internship in India".

FMGs recently asked NMC to investigate the lack of internship seats in medical colleges across the nation. They attended the Delhi Medical Council (DMC) after learning that there are only 42 seats available in three medical colleges for internships of FMGs, but they received no response.

FMGs in Rajasthan had earlier organised a protest against the constrained number of internship seats. Medical students who received their MBBS degrees from abroad from institutions recognised by the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) must pass the International Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE) in order to practise medicine in India. They must complete the necessary medical internship after clearing the FMGE exam.
