• At the time of independence, Indian agriculture was characterised by low productivity, traditional farming methods and heavy dependence on the monsoon.
• To achieve food security and improve the economic condition of farmers, the Government of India introduced several agricultural reforms.

Step 1: Green Revolution
The introduction of High Yielding Variety (HYV) seeds during the Green Revolution greatly increased the production of wheat and rice, particularly in Punjab, Haryana and western Uttar Pradesh.
Step 2: Expansion of Irrigation
The construction of dams, canals, tube wells and other irrigation projects reduced dependence on rainfall and enabled multiple cropping, resulting in higher agricultural production.
Step 3: Government Support
The Government introduced Minimum Support Price (MSP), institutional credit, crop insurance, fertilizer subsidies and agricultural research programmes, which encouraged farmers to increase production. Part (II): Improvement in Technology (2 Marks)
Step 4: Mechanisation of Agriculture
The use of tractors, harvesters, threshers, seed drills and other modern farm machinery increased efficiency and reduced labour requirements.
