ME Power Electronics FAQs

Ques. Describe the role of Power Electronics in Embedded System

Ans. The role of power electronics in embedded systems depends on the application that the embedded system is being used for. Some embedded systems might require power electronics while others might not. Power Electronics with embedded systems might be used to control electrical or electronics loads.

Ques. Can we use Arduino in Power Electronics?

Ans. There are various power electronics projects that use Arduino. Arduino can be used to control switching power electronic devices, or can also be used to trigger switching power electronic devices such as MOSFET, IGBT, GTO by generating Gate pulses.

Ques. Is there a difference between electronics and Power Electronics?

Ans. A major difference between power electronics and electronics is that the latter is used for low power devices. Electronics are concerned or used with devices such as resistors, capacitors, op-amps, etc. Power Electronic devices on the other hand use high power as well magnetism. A high power is a result of high current flowing through the devices, which leads to the study of magnetic field and electric field is being studied rigorously.

Ques. Are power electronics courses better in India or abroad?

Ans. Courses in India as well as abroad are exemplary. The course includes an equal amount of theoretical as well as practical exposure. It is necessary for the candidates to give them hands-on experience with the power electronic devices. The one major advantage of courses abroad is an opportunity to intern with top electrical or electronics companies. Interning with the companies gives the candidates industry experience, which is advantageous while applying for a job.

Ques. What are some of the best books for Power electronics?

Ans. Some of the best books for Power Electronics are Power electronics by PS Bhimbra, Handbook of Power Electronics by MH Rashid, Power Electronics by MD Singh, etc. Candidates can also take reference from websites such as Electrical4u, toturialpoint.com, circuitstoday.com and so on.

Ques. Is ME in Power Electronics better or Mtech?

Ans. Both the degree levels are equally necessary and important for candidates willing to pursue the particular specialization. Both the courses are 2-years long, and have many job opportunities. An Mtech or a ME Power Electronics can work for some of the top government and private companies. ME however, is considered more recognized and respected by some.

Ans. Candidates willing to pursue a Bachelors course in Power Electronics have to qualify JEE Mains with a good score. However, for a Master’s program candidates need to apply for the GATE exam and qualify the same with a good score. GATE and JEE Mains is necessary to apply for a Masters or a Bachelors course in Power electronics or related disciplines.

Ques. Are NPTEL videos enough to clear entrance exams like GATE or LPUNEST etc.?

Ans. Even though NPTEL videos are enough to complete a power electronics course, it is however mandatory for candidates to take reference from other websites or courses. Also, GATE consists of paper EE which candidates need to apply for to pursue Master’s in Power Electronics. Thus, candidates need to study the entire syllabus of GATE-EE, not just Power Electronics.

Ques. How to get a job as a power electronics engineer or any related field?

Ans. Candidates need to apply for a Power Electronics job through campus-placements or off-campus. There are many job opportunities released by top companies like ABB, GE, Qualcomm etc., Candidates can apply for the post on the respective website. Some companies also require candidates to have relevant industry-work experience. Thus candidates need to apply for the job role accordingly.

Ques. How far in the future is the scope of power electronics? What could be the employment rate?

Ans. At least 80 percent of electric power is predicted to be generated using power electronic devices. Today power electronic devices in power system grids, to control electrical flow by managing electrical machines. Power Electronic devices have increased the efficiency of power systems, by replacing Ac with DC systems, less losses, and increased efficiency. All year college is celebrating college day, hostel day, and other national and international events celebration at the same time they provide a separate appreciation for the students they are in the top of each department. A very good library is provided in the college and they give assistance to the students on how to collect educational data from the Internet. A very good ambient for class and lab. College conduct an annual sports meet and arts festival and the top students and team will participate in the university events. Alumni group is available in the college.

Course Curriculum Overview:

My bachelor's degree is in Electrical engineering and I prefer only two courses for the Master of Engineering one is Power Systems and the second one is Power Electronics and Drives. We are only 15 students in the classroom (For ME seats are limited as per the university rules) and enough teaching and nonteaching staff for the department. Most of the teaching staff is Doctorates in their respective field and the teaching method is friendly and innovative basis. Examination conducted by the university and it is somewhat easy compared to the bachelor's Degree.

Ques. How good is the integrated circuits and systems M.Tech programme at IIT Madras?

● Top Answer By Anamika Sinha on 29 Mar 23

Ans. If you are considering pursuing an M.Tech program in India, the Integrated Circuits and Systems (ICS) group at IIT Madras is an excellent choice. This program is considered to be the best M.Tech program in India and is even better than M.Tech from IISC or any other old IITs. Here are some reasons why: Tie-ups with industries like Texas Instruments: The ICS group has tie-ups with various industries, including Texas Instruments, which provides students with the opportunity to work on cutting-edge projects. High possibility of getting placed in Texas Instruments: Due to the tie-up with Texas Instruments, the chances of getting placed in this company with a salary of at least 16+ LPA are much higher if you build your concepts to a greater depth. Impressive publication record: You can refer to the ICS group's website to see the kind of papers they have published. This indicates that the faculty are actively engaged in research and are contributing to the field. High-quality teaching: The ICS group has uploaded videos of their courses on their website, which you can watch to get an idea of how well they teach. Excellent placement record: IIT Madras has the best placement record, especially for Analog design engineer positions. This means that if you complete the M.Tech program from ICS, you are likely to have excellent job prospects. Of course, studying at IIT Madras is not easy, and you will have to work hard to survive. However, the effort will be worth it, as your knowledge will be much higher than graduates from other IITs. It is essential to note that exceptions exist. In conclusion, if you get the opportunity to study at IITM's ICS group, it is strongly recommended that you take it. Not taking advantage of this chance may lead to regret later on.Read more
