Upon graduating from the Biotechnology – Health program, you are prepared for a career in biotechnology, a high-tech trade that spans many employment sectors. You develop technical and knowledge-based skills through comprehensive experiential learning, as you are exposed to a variety of experimental techniques using cutting-edge scientific equipment across disciplines including microbiology, molecular biology, tissue culture, biochemistry, analytical chemistry, and pharmaceutical biotechnology. In accordance with accepted industry standards, you learn to collect, document, analyze, and present your lab and experimental data. Completion of a micro-credential in Changemaking and Social Entrepreneurism helps you to recognize opportunities in biotechnology and become serial problem solvers. In this program designed specifically for applicants with existing academic credentials, students with a degree in science can expand their knowledge of the biotechnology industry and complete their Biotechnology advanced diploma in two semesters. Biotechnology touches a broad range of industries including health, pharmaceuticals, food production and agriculture. College has seven campuses: Barrie, Orillia, Owen Sound, Midland, Muskoka, South Georgian Bay and Orangeville. Barrie is the main campus. 


Durham College is situated on the traditional lands of the First Peoples of the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation. These lands are covered under the Williams Treaties and rest within the traditional territory of the Anishinaabeg. They offer gratitude to the Indigenous Peoples who care for and, through the treaty process, share the lands on which we live, learn, teach and prosper today.


Library

Four of the seven campuses have library services. Library empowers the students with resources and provides them a learning opportunity. Library provides resources like databases, journals etc. 


The Oshawa Campus Library has approximately 700 study spaces available in a mixture of soft seating, open tables, and study carrels.

The hours change during the summer semester, exam period, and around the holiday break. They also have lots of items you can borrow besides books, including laptops, mice, podcast kits, stationery, and more!

The Library has 4 floors, offering a variety of study spaces and services.

  • Study areas are split into areas that allow for different levels of noise.
  • Colour printer on the second floor, black and white printers/scanners and copiers on all other floors
  • A digital recording room on the ground floor
  • 10 bookable group study rooms, for up to 8 people, each equipped with a whiteboard (LIB 303 and 305 have a Smartboard - use SmartNote for these boards, available on laptops for loan at the Service Desk; LIB 304 has a Brio display)
  • Silent study rooms on the 3rd and 4th floors
  • A beautiful Fireside Reading Room is also available for event booking
  • Computer workstations across the 1st, 2nd, & 3rd floors (available on a first-come, first-serve basis)
  • Assisted Use Carrel room, with adaptive equipment on the fourth floor

Campus Life

Georgian offers a variety of housing options to students – from on-campus residences (Barrie, Orillia and Owen Sound campuses) to off-campus apartment buildings, room and board, and houses to rent or share. Georgian offers a number of different food options. Barrie, Orillia and Owen Sound campuses offer multiple restaurants and meal plans. Many food vendors also accept the Georgian ONEcard. All seven campuses are in cities offering bus service to Toronto. All of those cities offer local public transit. Students have access to various services like health services, counselling services, advisory services etc.

The cutting-edge Student Services facility and the Centre for Collaborative Education are located on the Durham College campus in Oshawa.

City Life

Barrie, Ontario is a beautiful waterfront city located on the shores of Kempenfelt Bay, the western side of Lake Simcoe. It is a growing area that has become a popular destination for new immigrants. There is large employment growth and it has a good transit system. The city is also ideal for people who love the outdoors because of the swimmable beaches and ski hills located nearby. There are many great hiking paths, great skiing, and many watersports. 


Besides being Canada's main economic hub, Ontario is also known for its natural diversity, including vast forests, beautiful provincial parks, four of the five Great Lakes and the world-famous Niagara falls.
