The Master of Nursing Practice aims to prepare graduates to practise effectively at an advanced practice level. Graduates will demonstrate ethical, safe, high quality, expert clinical decision making within an interdisciplinary team, and psychomotor skills commensurate with specialised theoretical knowledge, evidence-based practice and person or client-centred care.

This degree is conducted in the School of Nursing and Midwifery who through its clinical partnership program and community links, has an established research program in quality and patient safety research.

A major foci of the research programs are organized into three themes that apply to all practice environments: Patient Experience, Patient Safety and Workforce Development.

A Master of Nursing degree is awarded for a substantial, original contribution to knowledge achieved in up to two years of full-time study (or two to four years of part-time candidature).

The Master of Nursing is an approved program of research involving a substantial written thesis on the topic of your choice and under expert supervision. The degree is assessed on the result of thesis, with minimal or no coursework component required.

This course is designed for registered nurses with a demonstrated ability to conduct extensive study and research in a focused area of nursing. It will allow you to make new discoveries and ultimately improve the health of individuals, families and communities.

You’ll plan, undertake and disseminate rigorous research into a specialised area of nursing. The course will provide you with excellent professional development as well as the chance to make a contribution to knowledge and clinical practice in nursing.

The focus of the Master of Nursing is to provide the necessary skills for Registered Nurses to meet their professional goals in a clinical or research setting. This includes studying cultural and social diversity in health care, evidence based health care and leadership in clinical practice. Our students are provided the option to choose a major in either clinical leadership, clinical teaching, aged care, primary health care or research studies, preparing you for career progression in your chosen field.

Opportunities are provided for students in their final sessions of study to apply these advanced nursing concepts learnt through a specific project or research experience relevant to your professional goals.This program can be completed through either full time or part time study, as well as distance or on campus, allowing you the flexibility to integrate it into your current workplace requirements.


Admission Criteria/Better to Have

Applicants must have demonstrated evidence of a high standard of research ability. This is normally an Honours year to H2B (60%+) standard, or a coursework master degree with a substantial thesis. However, other evidence of research ability may be considered and could include a thesis as part of an international undergraduate degree; relevant refereed publications; research awards; or research experience.
