On my way to become a Melbournian!

7.3 /10

When I was thinking of choosing my University I had in my mind that, The University of Melbourne is Australia’s number one University and comes in the global ranking of the best universities in the world and is recognised as the best in the world for business and management programs. It has world class infrastructure with libraries, computers, internet and research base that will help me in creating the kind of future I want for myself. It will provide me with in depth knowledge about HR and help me grow more in this field.

Course Curriculum :

The Course Curriculum is one of a kind. The University allows us to choose out subjects according to our own choice and order which makes the course customised for us as students. We are also provided industry exposure via programs like GVIP(https://students.unimelb.edu.au/careers/get-career-ready/leadership-and-employability-programs/global-victoria-intellect-program) and Live projects (https://students.unimelb.edu.au/careers/get-career-ready/leadership-and-employability-programs/live-projects-for-international-students) along with subjects like Business Practicum (https://handbook.unimelb.edu.au/2020/subjects/busa90473). I have undertaken or would be studying them in the coming semesters, and can say for sure that they provide hands-on experience with great networking opportunities and increases exposure to a great extend.

Exams :

The requirements for my course were as follows I was required to have completed my undergraduate degree and scored a minimum of 70% in order to be a strong candidate. In addition I was responsible to submit a Statement of Purpose indicating why I wished to study abroad, in the particular university and pursue the particular course. I was also expected to write and English language test having minimum band of 6.5. I undertook IELTS and got a score of 7.5. In addition, after the offer I was supposed to apply for BUPA health insurance as well as book my accommodation in Melbourne.

Placement :

The University provides a number of opportunities to network and make your way through different companies. I am a part of Melbourne University Consulting Club, where in, I have hosted a number of workshops with some of the major consulting firms like AT Kearny, EY, Accenture and others. We get to network with them and build our relationships so that we can later ask for any vacancies. In addition, there are a number of employability workshops that take place where a number of companies are invited to the campus and students are encouraged to drop-in their resumes in order to be considered for the roles.

Events :

There are a number of clubs and societies hosting different events on a daily basis in the campus. The University is backed by a very strong Student Union namely- UMSU. The Student house provides free food to students on Thursdays and Tuesdays. Apart from this, there are gym and swimming pool facilities. The first semester students are provided free swimming lessons for one whole semester. There are a few major libraries in the University providing a wide range of books and facilities. The Campus has an open Wifi that can be logged in using the student ID. Apart from this the university has well equipped research facilities and labs.

Scholarship :

No, I have not received any scholarships.

Faculty :

The faculty is very approachable and always available to solve our queries. In addition, the faculty to student ratio is convenient, with no student feeling left out or unattended. Professor Franz is one of the most respected professors I have come across. He has left a mark in my academic career and I wish to be like him. He sought to explain concepts in depth and made extra efforts to make the course engaging.

Hostel :

I live in Unilodge D1 which is based on Bouverie Street and is a 5 minutes walk to the University campus. It is a studio apartment consisting of a single bed, kitchenette, bathroom, balcony, sofa and study table. The wifi, gas and water bills are included in the rent. The average rentals in this region are about 1000-1500 AUD. There are a number of shared accommodation options as well such as student housing, other Unilodges, Atira, etc. Moreover, there are a number of cheaper options that are available in docklands and south bank, but are about 20-25 minutes away from the university campus.
