University of Southern Maine Application Deadlines for Indian Students
The University of Southern Maine runs two admission cycles a year: a Fall (August) primary intake where most programs open, and a smaller Spring (January) intake where the majority of departments still accept applicants. Both use the same ApplyWeb portal and the same USD 50 international application fee. Deadlines below are per the USM Office of International Programs deadlines page.
The University of Southern Maine’s primary intake for Indian students is Fall (August) - most programs open here.
| Intake | Level | App Opens | Deadline | App Fee | Portal |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Spring 2027 (January) | UG & PG | Rolling, open now | October 15, 2026 | USD 50 (INR 4,770) | ApplyWeb |
| Fall 2027 (August) - Primary intake | UG & PG | Rolling, open now | June 1, 2027 | USD 50 (INR 4,770) | ApplyWeb |
| Fall 2026 (August) | UG & PG | (Closed) | (Closed - June 1, 2026) | - | - |
Planning note: USM asks Indian applicants to begin the application about one year before the intended term because I-20 issuance, F-1 visa slots, and Indian bank remittance approvals each add weeks of lag.
A handful of graduate programs, chiefly Occupational Therapy, School Psychology and a few Nursing tracks, admit only in Fall. Confirm your program’s own deadline before targeting Spring.
University of Southern Maine Eligibility Requirements for Indian Students
Eligibility at the University of Southern Maine has two layers: an academic floor and an English-proficiency floor. Both are institution-wide minimums; individual programs may set higher bars, especially Nursing, Occupational Therapy and the Doctor of Nursing Practice.
- UG general entry: Class XII from a recognised Indian board with an aggregate around 55 percent, matching USM’s stated 2.25 GPA floor.
- PG general entry: a recognised four-year Indian bachelor’s degree with a bachelor’s-level academic record in a related field.
- Financial: a signed financial affidavit showing the ability to cover one full year of tuition plus living costs before the I-20 is issued.
The English-proficiency floor is uniform across direct-entry UG and PG applicants, drawn from the USM English Language Requirements page.
| Test | Direct Entry Minimum | Admissions Pathway (UG only) |
|---|---|---|
| TOEFL iBT | 79 | 60 |
| IELTS Academic | 6.5 | 5.5 to 6.0 |
| PTE Academic | 53 | 46 |
| Duolingo English Test | 105 | 90 |
University of Southern Maine English Waiver for Indian Graduate Applicants
USM’s Graduate Admission page waives the English proficiency test for a graduate applicant who holds a degree from an institution where instruction is in English. Indian applicants whose bachelor’s transcript names English as the medium of instruction typically qualify. Request an MOI letter from your registrar on college letterhead and upload it with your transcripts. Undergraduate applicants do not have this waiver and must submit a test score, but two lower-threshold entry routes exist: the Admissions Pathway Program (IELTS 5.5 to 6.0) and the Intensive ESOL Program (IELTS 5.0), both bridging to direct-entry study.
Insider note: A Class XII first-attempt English score above 70 percent from a CBSE, ICSE or state board that names English as the medium of instruction is often accepted alongside the MOI letter, but this is a graduate-only concession.

University of Southern Maine Transfer Credit Policy
Indian students entering after one or two years at an Indian university may transfer credits through course-by-course evaluation. USM accepts up to 75 transfer credits toward a 120-credit bachelor’s, subject to WES or ECE course evaluations submitted with the application.
University of Southern Maine MBA Admissions for Indian Students
The AACSB-accredited MaineMBA is delivered jointly with the University of Maine and is offered in both online and on-campus formats with identical admission criteria. The program requires 30 credits and offers 13 concentrations spanning finance, marketing analytics, business analytics, healthcare management and sustainability. Base tuition is USD 780 per credit (around INR 74,412 per credit); a full program lands around USD 23,400 (INR 22.33 Lakhs) in tuition.
MaineMBA Admission Requirements at University of Southern Maine
USM operates a test-optional policy: GMAT and GRE scores do not influence the admission decision, and the GMAT requirement is waived at a 3.0 undergraduate GPA. The core admission floor is a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution and a 3.0 cumulative GPA preferred (3.5 preferred for competitive tracks). Work experience is not mandatory but valued by adcom.
MaineMBA Rounds and Deadlines at University of Southern Maine
The MaineMBA uses the same USM graduate cycle: Fall 2027 (deadline June 1, 2027) and Spring 2027 (deadline October 15, 2026). Applications are reviewed on rolling basis. There is no separate MBA application fee beyond the standard USD 50. No interview is required for the online cohort; the on-campus cohort may request a Zoom interview for scholarship consideration.
Insider note: Indian applicants with strong quantitative undergraduate records (engineering, mathematics, commerce with econometrics) often qualify for the GMAT waiver even without meeting the 3.0 GPA in Indian percentage terms; frame your transcript conversion clearly in the SOP.
University of Southern Maine PhD Admissions for Indian Students
USM offers doctoral programs in Public Policy, Leadership, Nursing (DNP), Occupational Therapy and School Psychology. Each track admits once a year in Fall, with the same June 1 international deadline. Admissions are program-committee driven, meaning a faculty match matters as much as your quantitative scores.
PhD Application Requirements at University of Southern Maine
Indian applicants need a master’s degree in a directly related field, three academic recommendation letters, a research statement of 1,000 to 1,500 words, a CV, and IELTS 6.5. GRE is not required across most doctoral tracks. School Psychology and OT programs also require a video interview and, for OT, prior clinical hours.
PhD Funding at University of Southern Maine
Doctoral funding is program-specific and typically covers tuition remission plus a modest stipend for teaching or research assistantships. Confirm the current stipend amount with your target program during the interview.
Planning note: Begin contacting potential advisors at least six months before the June 1 deadline; USM’s program committees weigh advisor endorsements heavily and lock decisions in early winter.
University of Southern Maine Application Process
The application flow at USM is centralised through the ApplyWeb portal, with document uploads happening inside the portal and a separate financial affidavit sent to the Office of International Programs. Expect the full submission to take 8 to 12 hours of prep time across a two-week window.
- Create an account on the ApplyWeb portal and select your program and intake.
- Fill in the online application form with academic history and personal details.
- Upload official transcripts, English proficiency scorecard, SOP and CV.
- Request recommendation letters through the portal’s recommender workflow.
- Pay the application fee of USD 50 (around INR 4,770) via the ApplyWeb card gateway.
- Submit the financial affidavit and passport bio-page separately to admitusm@maine.edu.
- Track application status inside ApplyWeb until decision.
- Prep time: allow 8 to 12 hours across two weeks for a clean submission.
- Portal fee: USD 50 (INR 4,770), non-refundable, paid at submission.
- Recommenders: two for UG, two to three for graduate programs.
University of Southern Maine Admission Decisions Timeline
USM operates on a rolling review system, so decisions typically arrive four to eight weeks after a complete application is submitted. Indian applicants should account for the additional lag from I-20 issuance and F-1 interview scheduling.
- Decision window: 4 to 8 weeks after all documents received.
- Offer type: unconditional if all requirements met; conditional if final transcript is pending.
- Acceptance deadline: typically 30 days to confirm the seat and pay the deposit.
- Deposit for I-20: program-dependent, generally USD 200 to USD 500.
- Deferral: a one-term deferral is usually granted on written request before the term start.
University of Southern Maine Documents Required
USM asks for the same core document set across international UG and PG applicants, with two graduate additions (letters of recommendation and, for research programs, a writing sample). Assemble the set before starting the application to avoid mid-application delays.
- Passport bio-page valid for at least six months past intended entry.
- Official academic transcripts from Class X, Class XII and bachelor’s degree, mailed sealed or through a secure clearinghouse.
- Degree certificates from all completed qualifications.
- English proficiency scorecard sent directly by the testing body, or an MOI letter for eligible graduate applicants.
- Statement of Purpose of 500 to 1,000 words describing academic goals and fit.
- Letters of recommendation: two for undergraduate, two to three for graduate applicants.
- Resume or CV highlighting academics, projects and work experience.
- Financial affidavit plus a bank statement showing one year of tuition and living expenses.
- Application fee receipt for USD 50 paid through ApplyWeb.
Before you apply: Indian applicants should get transcripts evaluated by WES or ECE when applying with a three-year bachelor’s degree, as USM occasionally requests course-by-course evaluation for graduate admission.
University of Southern Maine Acceptance Rate
The University of Southern Maine is best described as an access-oriented university, meaning it admits most applicants who meet its stated requirements. Third-party estimates place the overall acceptance rate at roughly 79 percent, based on published enrolment patterns across recent cycles; USM itself does not publish an official institutional figure. See the USM ranking band for how the university positions itself in USA regional rankings.
University of Southern Maine Program-Level Selectivity
Selectivity varies sharply by program. Nursing, Occupational Therapy, School Psychology and the DNP track are more competitive because of clinical placement caps. Business, computing, humanities and public health tracks track close to the institutional rate.
University of Southern Maine Indian Applicant Profile
Indian applicants at USM historically enter with Class XII in the 65 to 80 percent range and IELTS bands of 6.5 to 7.5. Graduate cohorts skew toward bachelor’s holders with a 60 to 75 percent aggregate and one to three years of work experience.
Insider note: The 79 percent overall figure hides the tighter admission rate for capped health-science programs; if you are targeting Nursing or OT, treat the effective bar as much higher than the headline number suggests.
USA F-1 Visa Process for University of Southern Maine Students
Indian students admitted to USM apply for the F-1 student visa, the standard academic visa for full-time degree study in the USA. USM’s designated school official (DSO) issues the I-20 form after admission and financial documentation clear, typically within two weeks of your seat-deposit payment. You then pay the SEVIS I-901 fee of USD 350 (around INR 33,390) at fmjfee.com, complete the DS-160 online application, and book an F-1 interview at the US Consulate in Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata or Hyderabad.
Carry your I-20, DS-160 confirmation, SEVIS receipt, passport, admission letter, financial documents and academic transcripts to the interview. Visa officers typically decide within the interview itself, and successful applicants receive their passport with the visa within 5 to 10 working days.
2026 update: F-1 visa slot availability at Indian consulates has tightened for Spring 2027; book your DS-160 slot within seven days of receiving the I-20 to avoid rolling back to Fall 2027.

The following tips are drawn from Indian-applicant patterns at the University of Southern Maine and reflect the levers that shift decisions at this institution specifically.

- Frame your SOP around Portland’s job market, especially for Nursing, MBA and CS applicants.
- Request WES evaluation early if you hold a three-year Indian bachelor’s degree.
- Contact faculty six months out for PhD and research-heavy master’s tracks.

Overview
I wanted to get away from home but I didn't want to be too far away, because we also have a university in my home town. So I went to USM where I had friends and other family going as well. I also liked that it was near Portland which is one of our biggest cities in Maine and that I could have a lot of opportunities there.
