As a student in the Bachelor of Science in program at the , you can choose from three specializations: Professional and Technical Communication, Journalism of Science, and Journalism of Technology and Business.

Journalism schools have traditionally been media-centered, preparing students to work in a particular field—broadcast, newspaper, magazine, etc. But many journalists—including, famously, Ted Koppel—say training to a specific medium is a waste of time in a world where the mediums are constantly evolving. Social media platforms such as Twitter and Facebook demand innovative ways of communicating.

Wisely, Illinois Tech does it differently. We are one of the few programs in the country that will train you to be a subject-matter expert, as well as how to write solid copy. Illinois Tech is in the unique position to accomplish these goals because our journalism students learn from experts in technology, science, and professional communication.

If you choose any of the degree specializations, you will be amazed at how your sensitivity to the social and cultural aspects of communication, fluency with the latest computer technologies, and strategies for information design mature over the course of four years.
