Except for all-female McCormick Hall, all the other MIT halls have all-gender living facilities. Students are often not guaranteed an assignment to a particular residence hall but efforts are made to ensure that they are offered one of their top choices.
Residential student governments are responsible for organizing athletic, social, and intellectual programs for residence hall members. The housing tax on MIT dorms is used supporting such activities and co-curricular activities.
Availability of MIT Dorms to UG Students
- MIT guarantees four years of consecutive on-campus housing to all its fully-registered undergraduate students. However, if students choose to live off-campus after their first year, take a leave of absence, or study abroad, they can request to return to on-campus housing through the Waitlist Process. The availability of on-campus housing through this process depends on its availability.
- MIT mandates that all first-year students reside in an on-campus undergraduate residence hall throughout their first year of study. This requirement is necessary as it allows them to be in close proximity to their classes, as well as the on-campus facilities and resources which are essential during the initial phase of college life. However, there are some exceptional cases where first-year students who are married or will be residing full-time with their parents or guardians in the Boston area may be exempted from this requirement.
Graduate MIT Dorms
Around 32% of students enrolled with Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s PG courses live on-campus with 8 residence halls. Who Can Apply for MIT Dorms for Postgraduates?
MIT dorms are available to PG students who fit in either of the below listed categories:
- Registered as FT graduates students
- Registered as FT graduate student with eligible partner, spouse or/and families
- UG student with eligible spouse/family/partner
- Eligible PG students who could not apply for housing on time can apply with the waiting listing and housing will be offered on availability-basis.

Application process for Undergraduate MIT dorms
- The application process for first-year housing for Summer 2023 is available for submission between February 15, 2023, and March 19, 2023. Similarly, for Fall 2023, applications can be submitted from April 4, 2023, until May 31, 2023.
- Every housing application is treated equally, and the timing of its submission does not affect its consideration, as long as it is received by the deadline indicated on the application.
- It is possible to modify the preferences that you have submitted for housing before the deadline. You can do this by accessing the housing portal and ensuring that any changes you make are saved within the system.
- Deadline for room assignments for incoming first-year students is August 2, 2023
Application process for Graduate MIT dorms
Usually, the Housing Portal opens access to the Self-Selection process in May, and this continues until October for fall housing selection (or from November to March for spring selection). Through the Self-Selection process, students can take control of their housing search by selecting their preferred housing unit based on availability. Specific dates are given below for 2023-24 are given below:
- January 3, 2023: Self-selection resumes
- March 9, 2023: Last self-selection day for Spring 2023
- May 4, 2023: Self-selection opens for Fall 2023
You must keep the following things in mind when applying for MIT dorms:
- Send in your housing application on time before deadlines
- Applications for fall housing are often available by late March or early April. For spring, housing applications are available in late October or early November.
- Housing will not be allocated until you have been accepted for admissions at Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Once housing license agreements are made by students planning to study at MIT, an auto-response email with monthly rent and building expenses will be shared. A follow-up email will be sent in 5-7 days informing you of building, apartment number, dates to move in and roommate information available.
