Brenna Mehl Review at University Of North Carolina [UNC], Chapel Hill | Collegedunia

UNC Review

BM
7.5 /10

It has been great going to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The campus culture is incredible. Students tend to have a lot of school spirit and tend to look out for one another. The faculty are supportive, but some programs have large class sizes. There is good name recognition and good employment prospects post graduation. Chapel Hill is a wonderful place to live, with great weather and a walkable environment.

Course Curriculum :

Some CS courses are a bit behind, but new courses offer good practical experience in new technologies. I’m currently in a CS class that offers industrial exposure by pairing groups with real clients for a software engineering project. I haven’t been involved in research but there are many opportunities to get involved.

Exams :

My Scores: SAT 1580, ACT 35 International Students Need one of the following to prove English proficiency: TOEFL or TOEFL iBT Home Edition – 100 or higher. IELTS Academic – 7.0 or higher. Duolingo – 130 or higher. Cambridge English C1 Advanced – 185 or higher. None, just the common app essay and a few additional UNC specific essay questions.

Placement :

Unsure about median salary, but there is great name recognition. Companies like Deloitte, Accenture, Pinterest, SAS, Fidelity, IQVIA, Wells Fargo, Credit Suisse visit often. Lots of research too.

Internship :

Interned as a software engineering intern two summers. SAS in Cary after sophomore year, made $23/hr. Interned at Credit Karma after junior year, made $45/hr.

Fees :

$9,028 USD / year for in-state students.

Scholarship :

I got the UNC women’s leadership council scholarship, a $5000 one time award. I didn’t have to do any additional work other than my college application.

Faculty :

Class sizes are large in computer science and biology. Electives have smaller class sizes but are still relatively large in this major. Kris Jordan is an incredibly dedicated professor in the computer science department at unc.

Campus Life :

Great sports facilities, large (but old) libraries, decent Wi-Fi around campus, lots of student run organizations because it is a big school, great research facilities.

Hostel :

Good on campus housing, around $7,400 / year for dorm living. My rent in a house off campus now is $825 a month.
