Oxford Demystified

TG
6.0 /10

The terms are fast-paced and highly academic. Even though sometimes the academic load can get high, it was always manageable for me. The problem sheets favor quality over quantity. As for other social activities, there are lots of opportunities to join clubs and societies, little social events in your college and also your subject department. Lots of talks and workshops. We have formal dinners every now and then where you dress up. The exams are also traditionally taken and you must wear formal clothing.

Course Curriculum :

Lots of options in all fields, both pure and applied. High-quality material. We can opt to apply for internships through their career programme and also work on research projects in later years under a professor.

Exams :

My scores: IELTS 8 (minimum 7), MAT (Mathematics Admissions Test) 94 (no strict minimum). SoP - why you are interested in this course, evidence for interest e.g. projects, books/papers read, olympiads, tests, self-research LoR - two school teachers explained why I would be a suitable candidate by highlighting my strengths I had three online interviews, each one with different professors focusing on different maths topics. I was expected to solve a few questions live on a whiteboard, starting easy and gradually getting harder. Before the interviews, you must take the MAT and get a good enough score to progress to the interviews. For both of these, focus on your problem-solving skills in timed conditions. Do previous years’ papers, other papers like STEP, olympiads, watch videos etc. Interviews (2-3) - completely academic in nature

Placement :

Many go to tech companies like Google or finance companies like Optiver. Oxford provides a careers service where you can apply for jobs, internships, workshops, training programmes. About 80% of students are immediately placed. The median salary might be 30k-40k pounds per year.

Internship :

I interned under a maths youtuber/professor. This was unpaid. However , I have applied for paid summer internships which offer stipends like 2000 pounds/month. Again, internships can be applied to from the careers service.

Fees :

Around 42000 pounds per year for international students

Scholarship :

No

Faculty :

Around 1:10. The staff is knowledgeable and friendly.

Campus Life :

There are many student societies. Rowing is a popular sport. Many old-fashioned libraries as well as modern ones. A single university-wide Wifi network, which is not the best in student rooms. All sports available.

Hostel :

In first year, we were allocated shared rooms with one roommate. After that, we could choose to live alone. Usually shared bathrooms and showers, but there are some ensuites as well. Mostly old-fashioned rooms. 700-800 pounds per month. Otherwise, one might live in student rented homes outside campus which are more expensive.
