Aswathi Narikundil Jayan Review at Cranfield University, Bedford | Collegedunia

My journey at Cranfield

AJ
6.2 /10

My experience at Cranfield University was wonderful. Initially, I was clueless about many opportunities in the management field due to my lack of work experience. However, by the end of the course, I had gained knowledge about all the major management concepts and areas. I also formed valuable connections in the specific area of my interest. Building friendships with people from different countries enriched my experience, and the time spent in Spain remains one of my best memories ever.

Course Curriculum :

The course structure is updated almost every year, ensuring relevance and practicality. The structure is well-suited for students from non-management backgrounds. The program offers valuable industrial exposure through the Management Consulting project in Spain and internship opportunities. Additionally, students receive Lean Six Sigma certification and the course is CMI accredited. Cranfield University's research reputation is outstanding. Students have the option to choose between an internship and an internship-based thesis or a traditional thesis. The word count for the internship-based thesis is shorter than that of the traditional thesis. Each student is assigned an academic supervisor to assist with the thesis, and those working on internship theses also have an industrial supervisor from the company they are affiliated with.

Exams :

English language test certificate was mandatory to obtain the unconditional offer letter. There was an option to choose between IELTS, TOEFL, PTE, Cambridge Assessment English Test or Trinity College London Integrated Skills in English III. My score: IELTS 8. Minimum requirement: IELTS 7 overall and 6 in all skill components. I had to submit an SoP, 2 LoRs, and a CV. Make sure to use the UK standard template for the CV when applying for the program. In the CV, include details about how each course, work experience, or extracurricular activities have enhanced your skills. In the SOP, avoid generic statements about the reasons for choosing the program and university. Ensure that the SOP includes information about how your values and needs align with those of the university. Additionally, it's crucial to notify the faculty members about the Letter of Recommendation well in advance to avoid any last-minute rush.

Placement :

There is no campus placement available. However, some companies offering internships offer full-time jobs upon successful completion of internships. Throughout the year, there were numerous job fairs and talks. The careers team is very helpful in enhancing CVs, practicing for interviews and offering career advice. Several of my friends have already secured positions in the UK, Dubai, and their respective home countries. However, I don't have the exact figures regarding the number of students successfully placed.

Internship :

Since I am interested in research, I opted for traditional thesis instead of an internship. The research process was smooth and I interviewed participants from different countries for the same. My supervisor was very helpful and definitely made me a better researcher.

Fees :

The current fee for international students is £33,770 for MSc in Management.

Scholarship :

I got a £2000 scholarship from MSc in Management course director. A short essay detailing our achievements and outlining our career plans was to be submitted.

Faculty :

Cranfield University boasts one of the best faculty-to-student ratios, with one academic staff member for every 5 students. The faculties were not only approachable but also well-versed in their respective subject areas. They welcomed feedback and were very supportive. There was an instance when I expressed my interest in a specific area and the faculty went above and beyond by bringing in a guest speaker specialising in that field.

Campus Life :

The main campus is situated in a rural area between Bedford and Milton Keynes. Accessing shops and restaurants can be a bit challenging, given the limited options in Cranfield. However, it serves as an excellent environment for focused studies. The atmosphere is remarkably calm, and the campus itself is beautiful. Numerous clubs cater to various interests, and there's even the option to start new ones. On-campus sports facilities include areas for football, basketball, cricket, badminton, as well as a gym etc. The library is outstanding, offering a pleasant view of the campus and the campus airport. Overall, it's a serene and peaceful campus. I don't know much about the Shrivenham Campus.

Hostel :

Accommodation in Cranfield tends to be slightly pricier when compared to cities like Coventry or Leeds, which are farther away from London. Rent for a room with a private bathroom and shared kitchen will exceed £600 per month. On-campus housing may come with a higher rent, but commutation will be easy. Shared accommodation, where bathroom and kitchen facilities are communal, offers a more affordable alternative. Housing options are available not only in Cranfield but also in Bedford and Milton Keynes, with accessible bus services from both locations. However, it's worth noting that bus frequency tends to be lower during weekends.
