Rameez Badhurshah Review at Newcastle University [NCL], Newcastle Upon Tyne | Collegedunia

From Newcastle University to the World

RB
5.7 /10

The atmosphere is good and culturally exclusive. The people are kind and DO NOT discriminate based on your gender/religion or caste. This is something which is very important as there are Faith Officers who are in charge of maintaining peace and harmony within the campus. Apart from that there are many events and forums which one can join based on his interests.

Course Curriculum :

I'm gaining research experience but most of the research tasks are self-preparatory. There are regular workshops being conducted in various areas but these are very competitive.

Exams :

For post-doctoral research associate position, number of publications was the key parameter in securing this position. Apart from that qualification from a reputed institute such as IIT is always appreciated. I had submitted mainly the CV prior to interview through the University portal website. In the interview, I had to give a small presentation of my works followed by question and answers. This was followed by a non-technical interview in which I had been asked questions which were not technical such as how would you promote this project, what additional skills do you think you would need in future to complete this project, give one example from your previous experience where in something went wrong in the project and how did you tackle it among others. I had one round of interview after application with the Professor with whom I wanted to work, it was a sense check on my knowledge and its depth. There is no concept of working under any professor, you work with the professor and contribute to the work. Interviews also test the skills of communication.

Placement :

Placement opportunities are provided but are not guaranteed. There is a Visa option which allows to stay back for 2 years after the completion of program and most of the students opt for this and then search for job.

Internship :

No, I have not opted for any internship or co-op essentially due to my commitments with the project.

Faculty :

Faculty, as well as staff, are very helpful and kind. Faculty are easily approachable atleast in my case. If the faculty is busy he might ask you to meet online through Teams call. The staff value our work and give importance to small tasks. I would like to mention the name of one of the staff member 'Jenny Kanellea', her help during my conference registration was very helpful. I will also like to mention another staff member 'Natalie Hugall' who was supportive during one of my personal issue.

Campus Life :

Campus life is good. WiFi is available at most of the places. Libraries and laboratories are up-to-date. If a particular facility is not available in the campus, the University has several tie ups with other Universities and the work can be performed in the other University by booking a slot. So the environment is very co-operative. Also, there are people from many cultures which gives so much information and knowledge of the geographical aspect of those countries.

Hostel :

The rooms can be rented and also shared but this would need deposit or paying the rent for entire 40 weeks at once as this is the norm for student from abroad. Outside the city area, homes can be rented and this would need deposit of just one month. There are many hostel accommodations in and around the campus.
