English Proficiency Test Score for International Students

The University of Gothenburg has made it mandatory for all international applicants to submit a language certificate internationally recognized. The University requires English level 6 or English B from Swedish upper secondary school. The equivalent test score for fulfilling minimum requirements is given below:

Visa Process for International Students

Students from outside the EU/EEA or international students must have a residence permit to enter and study in Sweden. Citizens of an EU/EEA country only need a valid passport or ID card clearly stating their nationality to enter Sweden while citizens of a non EU/EEA country planning to stay for longer than three months, need a residence permit before entering Sweden. If the total period of stay in Sweden is less than three months, then the applicant should not apply for a residence permit, but for an entry visa.

Students can apply for a residence permit at the Swedish embassy or consulate in your home country. The process of getting the residence permit may take up to 12 weeks, so be sure to apply as soon as you receive your letter of acceptance.

The following documents will be required for the visa process:

  • Copies of the pages of passport with personal information, validity period and the permission to live in another country.
  • The letter of acceptance from the university that states that you have been admitted to a full-time course.
  • A copy of the proof that you have comprehensive medical insurance coverage in Sweden (if your study lasts for less than a year). This applies also if the college/ university covers your insurance.
  • A bank statement that proves that you can financially support yourself for at least one year. The document must cover the duration of your study and to be translated into English. Documents that show a scholarship or financial aid awarded to the student must also be attached.

Any documents to demonstrate eligibility for admission must be submitted by February 1. Admission decisions for round 1 applicants are disclosed in the beginning of April for the Autumn semester. Upon submission of applications to universityadmissions.se, students receive an email confirmation for the same. The admission decision is notified through an email and also published on the My pages of the universityadmissions.se. Applicants must follow the deadline and steps stated in the email to confirm acceptance of the offer. The names of students who fail to do so in the prescribed manner will be automatically cancelled from the course applied for.

Ques. Can I make a late application?

Ans. Courses and programs may be open for late applications. You can find out which courses and programs are open for late application at universityadmissions.se.

Ques. What are the dates for the start and end of semesters?

Ans. There is an autumn semester and a spring semester. The autumn semester starts around 1 September and runs for 20 weeks. The spring semester starts on Monday directly after the end of the autumn semester (roughly 20 January) and is also 20 weeks long. There are no holiday periods during the semesters.

Ques. I am on the waiting list for a course or program of study. How will I know if I have been admitted to the course or program?

Ans. If enough students who have been admitted to a course or program decline their places, then the University will start contacting applicants who are on the waiting list.

Ques. Is there any financial Aid for International Students?

Ans. International Students must bear the cost of their course. Students however can acquire scholarships if they meet the eligibility criteria.
