Entrance Preview :
I took Maharashtra CET in the Year 2005. Now the Admission criteria may have been changed. I scored 80% in the CET - do not remember my exact score ( its been 11 years since the result). It is one of the best colleges in Mumbai to do your engineering.
Course Curriculum Overview :
The Course Curriculum was in sync with the course of the Mumbai University. However I recently heard that the college had now become an Autonomous institution - so I cannot say for sure the course structure followed now. During my Time from year 2005-2009 it was the same course as the Mumbai University prescribes. Also during this time, the exams for the first and final year were conducted by the Mumbai University.
Internships Opportunities :
During my time 2005-2009 there was no internship that I was aware of. We did have final year project which spanned over the entire final year and had to be completed over the year . However there was no internship and as such no stipend.
Placement Experience :
The placement and job opportunities are decent for a college in mumbai. The Placement Cell was really doing their job and got many companies to visit our campus during our final year - few of these were TCS, Accenture , Cleartrip, Slumberger, ColPal etc. The starting packages were decent at 3.15 Lacs per annum to 5 Lacs per annum. It was a good package considering that the world was still reeling from the effects of the recession.
College Events :
There were a lot of events which kept happening in the college - ranging from Technical Paper presentations to College Annual Festival known as Symphony. There were also cultural festivals like Diwali , Holi Celebrations and Students Day and Teachers Day. Each of the classrooms celebrated with or without the faculty as they pleased.
Fee Structure And Facilities :
The Fee Structure was competitive - I paid about 37,000 in my first year but the fees kept on increasing every year - it was understandable as they were building another building for the Engineering during that time. The Final year fees was about 65000.
Loan/ Scholarship Provisions :
There was no scholarship that was explicitly offered by the college. However the college encouraged to look for scholarship from external sources and would assist us in every way ethically possible.
Campus Life :
The Campus life in the Somaiya college is very nice. The Campus is a huge one and very nice when compared to other engineering colleges in Mumbai - it is very hard to find such a big campus in a city like mumbai. The Gender ratio was good with almost 40% students being girls. There were no complaints on ragging or eve teasing and everyone was respected - from girls to all the new students just joining the college.
Exam Structure :
The Exam Structure again at that time (2005-2009) was a relaxed one which followed the one as governed by the mumbai university. There was 2 exams held every year - 2 Semesters as they are known and they would be after the Lab Exams. All the exams were after a long break given to the students to study which was called as PL - Preparatory Leave.
Admission :
I took Maharashtra CET in the Year 2005. Now the Admission criteria may have been changed. There was a open admission process at that time. I got the form for a nominal fee from the college and filled it and was asked to check the admission list on specified dates.
