UIET, MDU, Rohtak - Average return on Investment.

Remarks :

Overall, return on investment is fine in case someone just wants to get a B.Tech degree as compared to private colleges. One should not depend on college placement and not lot of companies visit for campus placement. Management needs to be more polite and helpful as many of them speak in local language making it difficult for outsiders to understand and communicate properly with them.

Entrance Preview :

I took exam of AIEEE in 2010 and qualified in the General category. I chose this college because of the following reasons: It is in close proximity to Delhi-NCR with good transportation (Journey time from Delhi- 2 hours) It is affiliated to MDU, Rohtak and is sort of state Govt. Engineering college. It's tution and hostel fee is very less as compared to private colleges.

Course Curriculum Overview :

Course curriculum is fine with provision for summer training/ internship after 4th Semester (minimum 6 weeks), 6th Semester (min. 6 weeks) and 7th Semester (min. 4 months). Student can either make a project under teacher of the college or can take training in any company relevant to his or her stream. After that, a viva or test is taken by Training and Placement officer or HOD of the department and marks/Grades are given to the students which are added to the student's marksheet.

Internships Opportunities :

College does not provide internships but a student can undertake summer training and make a project under a teacher. But, the entire expenditure has to be funded by student himself/herself. At our time, no company came to pick students for placements. M.tech students are given classes to teach students of B.tech to have hand on experience on teaching. They are paid Rs. 8000 and those who have qualified GATE are paid Rs. 12000 as scholarship.

Placement Experience :

Placements are sporadic and not on regular basis. Though the training and Placement office there- Mr. Arun Hooda is giving his efforts to improve the placement standards and make students employable. At our time, Relaxo visited our campus and around 5 students were offered jobs (Me being one of them, but I did not join it). Package was around Rs. 2.64 LPA. We were referred to pool campus placement by our TPO for Godrej & Boyce, Delhi and 3 students were placed with them. Package offered by Godrej to them was of Rs. 3.6 LPA. After our batch, Wipro (for CSE and Electronics guys), Kalindi (for Civil guys) and Nestle(Multiple streams) too has visited campus for placements, though I am not too sure about the packages offered by them.

College Events :

I have been coordinator for UIET's team to different fests like that of IIT, roorkie and Thapar University, Patiala. We won many prizes in Dramatics, quizzes, painting in them. UIET's fests are basically linked with MDU's fests and are organised once in a year. They include both cultural and technical competitions going side by side and are pretty awesome. Different private colleges affiliated to MDU participate in it and trust me, UIET has been winner in many of those. Participation of students are generally good from other colleges. During our time, we used to encourage students to participate in fests and had very strong team.

Fee Structure And Facilities :

As it is under University, Fees is very nominal as compared to Private colleges. A year's tution fee is of around Rs. 65,000/- which is paid in installments twice during beginning of semester. Therefore it is quite feasible financially for a person from middle class family to pursue his or her B.tech here. In the beginning there might be some additional security fee but that is refundable once you complete your course.

Loan/ Scholarship Provisions :

A student can apply for need cum merit scholarship if his or her finanical condition is bad. That scholarship is provided by Haryana Technical society but I think very few students get that. Apart from that, SC/ST students and Kashmiri migrant students get scholarship for education. M.tech students teach students of B.tech and earn while gaining teaching experience. They are paid Rs. 8000 and those who have qualified GATE are paid Rs.12000 as scholarship.

Campus Life :

Cultural fests are pretty grand and nice there. As I was in Mechanical, there were very few girls in our class (3 girls in a batch of around 60 students). There is no ragging in hostels and seniors do not harass juniors. Campus life is average and not too exciting for students who do not participate in extracurricular activities. It was pretty amazing for us. Labs are of state of the art and overall gender ration taking into account all the engineering branches is good.

Hostel Facilities :

Hostel facility is good. Students who are are from far off areas are allotted hostel seats first and so on. A year's hostel fee is of Rs. 10,000 and that includes security fee of Rs. 500 which is refundable at the end of the Academic year. Students are elected in Mess committee to take care of mess expenditures and maintain the food quality. A month's mess charge per student comes around Rs.1600- 1800. Food quality is pretty fine. As I was a hosteler myself, I found food during breakfast and lunch very good.

Alumni/Alumna :

Our seniors were pretty nice and we never had to face any ragging or harassment. In fact many of them were just like friends and few of them in fact helped us in the beginning to get hostel seat and helped us to adjust in new environment. We continued the same behavior and helped our juniors too.

Exam Structure :

Exams are conducted at the end of each semester and generally during May-June and Dec- jan. Every Semester includes internal tests conducted twice along with submission of assignments and many teachers give weightage and marks during practicals according to that too. Semester exams are conducted at the end of semester and includes both Written and Practical exams. Practical exams include viva and submission of projects or Practical files with experiments conducted during the semester. As I said earlier, summer training/ internship is also there after 4th Semester (minimum 6 weeks), 6th Semester (min. 6 weeks) and 7th Semester (min. 4 months). Marks/grades are also given according to it which adds to the student's Detailed Marksheet.

Admission :

After passing the AIEEE examination, I filled online Haryana state technical counselling and was allotted Biotechnology branch in first cut off. I took admission in the college in beginning of Aug, 2010. At the end of Aug 2010, few seats were left vacant in few branched and college conducted open physical counselling for it. I filled the form and according to my rank and vacant seat, I was provided Mechanical Engineering. Administration was pretty helpful at that time.

Faculty :

Most of the faculty is postgraduate in their respective engineering stream and few of them have received Doctoral degrees too. However at times, teachers miss the classes and donot teach things relevant to the exams. Therefore I would suggest students not to depend on the classes and do extensive self study to pass in the examinations.

Situated on the Delhi Jaipur highways, Starex, an UGI grants college is a haven for studies regarding any discipline, you name it, with an excellent faculty base and placement record. It equally supports sports and cultural talent apart from academics.
