Course Curriculum Overview :
Though there are a variety of courses in Biostatistics at the postgraduate level in many foreign universities, only a very few such courses are available in our country which is inadequate to meet the needs of more than 300 medical colleges and research institutions, Central and State health Ministries and related Departments and a large number of Pharmaceutical companies. With this background, a postgraduate course of two years’ duration, titled 'M. Sc in Medical Statistics' was started in Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences, Kochi in 2009 for the benefit of those students who would like to specialize in Biostatistics after their graduate / postgraduate courses in Statistics or Mathematics with Statistics. This course was renamed as 'M. Sc in Biostatistics' with some essential modifications in the syllabus which are appropriate for Biostatistics. This is a two-year course and exams are conducted yearly with a final project.
Placement Experience :
Successful candidates of this course will get opportunities to work as Faculty / Statisticians and Research assistants and officers in medical colleges, research institutions, Health Ministries and Departments, Pharmaceutical companies, and Universities.
College Events :
The department participates in almost all the academic and research activities of the institute strengthening the medical education and research at the institute with respect to all the relevant areas. Our department conducts many seminars on different topics related to Biostatistics.
Fee Structure And Facilities :
The discipline of Biostatistics has contributed substantially to the development of health, medical and biological sciences and has emerged as an important tool for research. The course has a greater demand right now. Course fees are around 1. 5 lacks for 2 years and hostel fees are around 60, 000 rupees per year. The mode of payment is the Demand draft.
Loan/ Scholarship Provisions :
I think so no scholarships are provided by our college. I don't know much about it. I have an education loan from Gramin bank taken for this course and college will do the necessary things for getting a loan.
Campus Life :
The department participates in almost all the academic and research activities of the institute strengthening the medical education and research at the institute with respect to all the relevant areas. We have many extracurricular activities. Our college conducts arts day, sports day, etc very grandly.
Alumni/Alumna :
All our seniors are placed, some are working in Pharmaceutical and healthcare companies some are working in hospitals as teaching staff and also as research assistants. All of them are very helpful and are in contact. Their guidance is very helpful to us.
Admission :
Selection will be made on the basis of academic scores in the qualifying examinations and performance in the interview. After graduation in Mathematics or Statistics, you can apply for the course M. Sc Biostatistics through the college website. The application starts receiving from April first week. We can apply even if our graduation results are not published but we have to submit a copy of the mark list at the time of the interview. By May last week, college will conduct the interview and within a month they will publish the result.
Faculty :
Our department has a total of 7 faculties. The head of the department is very famous and one of the pioneers in this course. He has a Doctorate in this subject and 50 years of experience. We have 5 well-qualified lecturers with several years of experience and a secretary of the department. Our faculties have to train the faculty, postgraduate students, and scientific staff in research methodologies, epidemiological methods, and biostatistical methods to help them in preparing scientifically and statistically valid research projects, to analyze the data applying appropriate statistical methods, interpreting the results meaningfully, and validly and in preparing their Thesis / Dissertation / Scientific papers for publication in reputed national and international journals.
