MBBS first year from Christian Medical College and Hospital, Vellore (2019)

One of my friends studied at CMC Vellore, according to him CMC is incredible when it comes to medical training.

Advantages:

  • You can literally learn from everyone, from the cleaning staff to the Director of the Institute.
  • All the treatment protocols are top notch and updated frequently.
  • There are frequent visits by CMC faculty to international medical institutes and visits of foreign faculty to CMC.
  • Students are given proper medical training and also taught about moral values and good behavior.
  • Everyone here has good teamwork and support all round the clock. You can even call the HOD of another department if your patient needs help at odd hours.
  • In CMC, all reports can be accessed from any corner of the hospital.
  • When you get a call for a consult, you would have already seen all his reports including CT pictures, etc, and while walking to the department, you can already formulate your next plan of action.
  • Everyone is given their due respect and patient oriented decision making always happens.

Disadvantages:

  • The work can sometimes be too much and exhausting.
  • Your personal life does suffer, especially if you have other commitments.
  • Academic discussions are relatively limited during routine work.
  • Though you will be treating each patient the best currently available evidence.
  • Most medical staff are overburdened, some departments do not have time to pursue research related activities.
  • CMC produces a phenomenal amount of research material.
  • The waiting list is too long, especially for patients with cancer. For this a separate rapid path must be instituted.

Though religion is the background for all good things happening at CMC, it can also be considered to be a bit biased towards the christian community. But overall it is very good.
